Chapter 5
At that Alpha ball, Genevieve offended the Alpha of the other pack, and Damon insisted I kneel and kiss his shoes to apologize on her behalf. I became the laughingstock at every pack’s gatherings.
Now, with so many pack members watching, if I kneeled, I’d never be able to hold my head up in front of everyone with dignity again.
Seeing that I remained unmoved, Damon made a phone call.
It wasn’t long before Raine texted me.
“Elena, I’ve been fired. What should I do? I finally found a job, and my grandmother’s still in the hospital. I can’t afford to lose this job.”
I clenched my fists, swallowing my humiliation.
As I knelt, the cameras focused on my face, snapping photo after photo.
Damon was still checking Genevieve’s injuries.
“Didn’t they say Alpha Damon and she were innocent?”
“They’re so close, could there really be something between them?”
Some of the pack members voiced their suspicions.
Damon opened his mouth to explain, but I cut him off.
“Everyone, actually, Genevieve is Alpha Damon’s first love. She had depression and went for treatment back then, and before she left the pack, they signed a bond–sealing deal. She’s the true Luna of Alpha Damon. I only saved Alpha Damon’s sister. To repay me for saving her life, she made me the Luna of the newmoon Pack. Alpha Damon was forced into it.”
“Alpha Damon, am I right?”
For the first time, the usually sharp–tongued Damon was speechless.
Shock filled his face. He hadn’t expected me to come up with such a ridiculous excuse.
But he didn’t correct me, because this was the best chance to protect Genevieve.
“So, Luna is the real other woman?”
“Yep, I’m the other woman.
“)
I lifted my head with a bitter, self–mocking smile.
From now on, I owed the pack nothing.
That night, Damon waited for me in the pack house.
He was anxious, his mind replaying the scene of me kneeling and clearing up the rumors in front of the pack members.
Every word I spoke had been calm, but there was a sense of despair in that calmness.
The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became.
Suddenly, his beta, Cameron, rushed in, out of breath.
“Alpha Damon, it’s bad! Luna has taken your child’s ashes and jumped into the sea!”
