Realizing I had truly left, Caleb finally panicked. He began to desperately search for any news of me. But by then, I had already secretly joined the research team and flown to a secret base in Antarctica. It wasn’t until three months later, when the research team and I emerged from the Antarctic rift, that Caleb finally got news of me. He hastily booked the next available flight, bringing with him the expensive specimens he had painstakingly re–purchased, flying directly to Antarctica.
Just as he was about to board, Stella called him from the hospital. “Caleb, I’m in so much pain! Will you come to the hospital and stay with me?” Hearing the anno- uncement for his flight’s departure, Caleb casually brushed her off. “It’s nothing, don’t be scared. I’ll be back soon.” Hearing this, Stella, on the other end of the line, gritted her teeth, unable to suppress her resentment. “Caleb, is my life less important than Sister Ava’s forgiveness? I know I was wrong! I’ll apologize to her right now and tell her to come back.”
“I know you resent me too, but you promised to protect me when we were little! Now you’re leaving me for Ava!”
Caleb frowned impatiently, his voice cold. “Enough, Stella. I already know you don’t have leukemia. I’m only taking your calls now out of respect for our shared chil- dhood.”
“Please remember, Ava is my wife.”
“I’ve already called your family, you’re moving back to the Reeds today.” With that, he ignored her sobs on the other end and hung up. In the hospital, Stella, tears streaming down her face, stared at the disconnected phone, then suddenly let out a laugh. “Caleb, you don’t know Ava as well as I do. How could she possibly forgi- ve you after all the harm you’ve caused her?”
