(Cooper’s POV)
People kept offering me drinks.
I was annoyed, so I went out to the terrace.
I wondered what Penelope was doing.
I sent her a text this morning.
She hadn’t replied.
I couldn’t stop looking at my phone.
I took it out again.
She still hadn’t replied.
She was probably angry.
We had both changed after Willow’s death.
Г
She was quiet.
I felt guilty.
I didn’t know how to be around her.
I went to see my grandmother yesterday.
She was lucid.
She took my hand. “Don’t torture each other.”
“Grandma, I really feel bad for them both.”
“You used to be so good together. If Willow
could see you now, she wouldn’t be happy.
Willow loved Penelope.”
I was stunned.
She was right.
We were torturing each other.
I sent her the text.
I remembered that she always wanted to go
to the famous temple in the city to pray.
I went there.
My assistant was shocked. “Mr. Sinclair, you
have a meeting with Mr. Smith.”
“Reschedule it for three hours from now.”
I wanted to get her a good luck charm.
When I got back to the booth, Janie was
there.
“Cooper, you’re ignoring me. I came all the
way here to see you.”
I pushed her away. “Remember your place.”
She cried. “Don’t you have any feelings for
me?”
“Never.”
Janie was the daughter of a business partner.
I wanted to make Penelope jealous.
It worked.
But I was done with it.
Г
But I was done with it.
Tonight, Janie had come with her father.
“I warned you not to follow me.”
“I have a wife.”
She wanted to say something.
I had my assistant push her away.
I got up to go back to my room.
I was going to call Penelope.
It was time to try to make her happy.
She had asked for a divorce.
<
It had made me angry.
But I had been mean to her.
I was pulling out my phone when it rang.
