Time is truly a mysterious thing. It can transform someone who never stepped foot in the kitchen into a person who understands the intricacies of daily life–cooking, cleaning, and all the small details in between.
Raelynn couldn’t help but marvel at the change. She had already taken a seat at the table.
Kendrick had prepared a few simple, home–cooked dishes. He picked up his fork first, tasted a bite, then said, “Go ahead, eat,”
Raelynn picked up the fork, spearing a piece of mushroom and putting it into her mouth.
Hmm, there was a slight bitterness to it.
Her thoughts became tangled, and the emotions she had carefully suppressed in the bathroom were threatening to break free.
She quickly set her fork down, took a deep breath, and tried to change the subject. “Mr. Reece…”
“Call me Kendrick.”
Pha
She paused, the words almost catching in her throat.
The word was something she couldn’t bring herself to say, no matter how hard she tried.
“Well then, how about telling me about you and your girlfriend?” Raelynn took a sip of water,
She didn’t really expect Kendrick to answer, so when he spoke, she couldn’t help but feel a jolt of surprise.
“We were each other’s first loves,” Kendrick said, scooping a large bite of food as he spoke.
“She started dating me when she was 18. She’s beautiful, smart, and trusted me completely, practically giving me her heart.”
“Mmm,” Raelynn’s nerves tightened, and her breath caught.
Kendrick finished his meal quickly, set his plate down, and wiped his mouth with a napkin. As he reminisced, his eyes softened with affection.
“She started interning at my company during college. After graduation, she naturally became my secretary. Objectively. speaking, her work ethic is outstanding. She’s strict with herself and holds herself to high standards. I trust her completely with any task.
“In this relationship, I’ve always been the one to dote on her, offering her a love that all women envy, I placed her in the palm of my hand and pampered her.” His voice faltered, and his gaze darkened. “In the end, I was the one who sent her to hell.”
Raelynn felt a storm rising in her chest. She forced a curious expression and asked, “Why?”
“Why?”
Kendrick murmured, his voice tinged with bitter self–mockery,
He suddenly laughed–a laugh that made Raelynn feel as if she might cry. “Probably because her father betrayed my mother’s love. I thought that it was only right for the daughter to pay for the sins of her father, so from the beginning, I approached her with revenge in mind. I used her; I destroyed her.
“I set her up in an inescapable trap, pushed her in, and watched as she was sentenced and sent to prison. I saw the woman of my enemy finally driven to madness, and I thought I would feel victorious,”
Kendrick’s voice grew darker as he spoke, his tone almost absurd.
‘But things don’t ever go as planned, do they? After she got out of prison, she became a different person. She fell into decay, gave up, and lost all hope for life. I looked into her eyes and saw nothing but emptiness.”
Raelynn’s body grew tense with discomfort.
“Then I learned the truth about the scars on her stomach”

Kendrick continued to pour out the pain that had always been buried deep inside him, almost self–destructive in his need to punish himself through the story.
Raelynn took a deep breath and quickly turned her gaze away, struggling to keep her emotions in check.
Unexpectedly, this man had already placed so much trust in Linda.
As she considered her next steps, Raelynn forced herself to shift away from the painful memories. She propped her chin on her hand and gave a playful, flirtatious smile. “Sounds like a sad story.”
