Raelynn couldn’t quite explain what she was feeling at that moment. It was a gentle, fleeting sensation, but one that seemed to reach every corner of her heart, pulling at the threads of memories long tucked away.
The stories that had unfolded on every inch of this land were etched into her soul, never to be forgotten, not for eternity.
Her chest tightened, and she felt an odd pressure, as though something was blocking her breath. She furrowed her brow and pretended to be curious, asking, “Mr. Reece, is this your home?”
“Yes,” he answered softly.
The man nodded slightly and poured her a glass of water before glancing up toward the second floor. “Let’s go upstairs.”
Raelynn stared at the room where she had lived for so many years. It felt like a prison, as though she couldn’t move, her feet rooted to the floor.
“Mr. Reece, you’re not serious, are you?” She teased, crossing her arms and smiling playfully, her eyes fluttering.
“Bringing random women home can affect the energy flow, you know. Aren’t you a businessman? Don’t you care about those little superstitions?”
“I do,” he said simply.
Raelynn raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Then why bring me back here?”
Kendrick turned to face her, his gaze heavy and complex. “I’m starting to believe in karma,” he said, his tone more serious than she had expected.
The words hit her harder than she thought, causing her expression to falter slightly.
Raelynn didn’t want to dwell on his words. She felt a wave of irritation rise in her chest, but before she could protest, his hand reached out and took hers.
In the instant she lowered her head, he was already pulling her upstairs.
Paelynn couldn’t break free. Though she desperately didn’t want to go into that room with him, she was helplessly dragged inside.
Everything inside the room was as familiar as ever–the large window seat, the fresh, vibrant flowers, the paintings on the walls, the scented candles on the desk.
Everything was just as it had been when she had lived here.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Raelynn stared in surprise, her eyes widening slightly.
This room was supposed to have been abandoned long ago, right?
But the odd look on her face disappeared the moment Kendrick turned his head.
“This is my room,” he said in the calmest tone, as though stating the most ordinary of facts.
Raelynn’s fingers, hanging at her sides, dug deep into her palm as she fought to control the rising tide of emotions. She smiled and winked at him. “I didn’t know Mr. Reece had a soft spot for these things.”
She pointed to the flowers and teased, “The room’s so cozy, it’s hard to believe there’s no lady of the house.”
After a brief silence, Kendrick suddenly spoke, “There is”
His answer made Raelynn stop in her tracks.
Kendrick’s lips curled into a self–mocking, regretful smile. “There was.”
Raelynn thought she must have misheard.

Her heart raced a little faster, and she cleared her throat before walking to the wardrobe. She reached out and pulled open the closet doors.
Without warning, the sight of her old dresses hit her like a wave, and Raelynn’s hand trembled as she froze in place.
Despite her best efforts to stay composed, her eyes widened in shock.
All the clothes in the wardrobe were hers.
Raelynn stared, her clear eyes unknowingly misting over.
No! What was happening to her?
She couldn’t let herself falter now.
Seeing her stiffen, Kendrick furrowed his brow and asked in a low voice, “What’s wrong?”
Could it be?
Before she could finish her thought, Raelynn slammed the wardrobe shut with a loud bang.
“So you really do have a partner,” she said with a fake sigh, feigning jealousy.
She put on an expression of disappointment and turned to leave.
Kendrick frowned sharply and, as she passed by, grabbed her wrist, his eyes narrowing in suspicion, “You’re surprised?”
