Kendrick’s gaze sharpened. Just moments ago, he had been lost in thought, but now, memories of happier times with Raelynn came rushing back. Each image played out before him like a movie, sweet and full of warmth. He reached out as if to touch them, but his hand met only emptiness.
“Thea, I’m tired. You should go home.”
“Kendrick.”
“Go home.”
His eyes flicked to her suddenly, cold and unyielding, yet carrying a weight that left no room for argument.
Two simple words from him made everything she wanted to say feel utterly insignificant.
Thea’s lips trembled, but in the end, she said nothing. Reluctantly, she stood and left.
Once she was gone, the private hospital room was filled with a chilling silence.
In his daze, Kendrick thought he saw the image of the petite woman from his past, fussing and worrying over him when he was sick, the concern clear on her face.
A bittersweet smile tugged at his lips, a smile laced with self–mockery.
In the darkness behind his closed eyes, he saw Raelynn.
Just as Kendrick was about to drift into sleep, something sparked in his mind. His eyes snapped open, and a light seemed to ignite in his gaze.
He had figured out a way.
Three days later, it was Kendrick’s discharge day. Thea arrived early at the hospital.
She opened the door to his room, but it was empty.
Thea furrowed her brow in confusion. Had he gone ahead to take care of the discharge paperwork?
Just as she was about to look for him, Kendrick’s tall figure suddenly appeared before her.
“Kendrick?” Thea looked at the box he was holding, puzzled.
“Open it,” he said, a small smile on his lips.
“What?”
“Open the box.”
Thea was lost, but she did as he instructed. Reaching out, she slowly opened the cardboard box.
Balloons filled with nitrogen slowly began to float upwards. Thea gasped in surprise, her hand instinctively covering her mouth as she watched the white balloons gradually fill the entire room, floating toward the ceiling. She was stunned and paralyzed by the sight.
Then, one balloon, tied with a silver ring, began to rise slowly from the box.
Thea’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at the ring. She could hardly believe it.
“You’ve always wanted to take care of me, haven’t you?”
Kendrick’s dark eyes fixed on her, but it seemed as if he was looking through her, seeing someone else.

“Kendrick?”
Tears welled up in Thea’s eyes. She was speechless, still unable to believe what was happening, deeply touched.
Then come home with me.
With that, Kendrick took the ring and placed it on her finger, his calm demeanor unwavering.
Happiness came unexpectedly. Overcome with emotion, Thea cried tears of joy. Without saying a word, she threw herself into Kendrick’s arms, holding him tightly.
Kendrick’s gaze remained calm, though there was a knowing in it. Soon, he would understand everything.
“Kendrick, I have checked the dates for you two. Three months from today is the perfect day for a wedding. Everything’s aligning for good fortune! You’d better start preparing–there’s finally going to be good news for the family.”
Kendrick’s stepmother, Daphne Reece, sat on the sofa, flipping through the astrological calendars, her face beaming with
excitement.
“What do you think?”
Kendrick shifted his gaze to the woman beside him. Thea was smiling, her heart full of happiness. “Kendrick, I’ll follow your
lead
Then we’ll do it as Daphne suggests.”
Kendrick nodded slightly, his expression unchanged.
To outsiders, it seemed like he was gentle and thoughtful with his fiancee, but his eyes were too calm, showing not even a flicker of excitement.
However, Thea was so engrossed in her own happiness that she was completely unaware of the subtleties.
Later that afternoon, Kendrick went to work after lunch, leaving Thea to spend time with her future mother–in–law, chatting and arranging flowers.
