Chapter 17 Kendrick Is Leaving
A week passed.
Since Kendrick’s departure, Alberto had returned to his normal routine. He focused on work while also waiting for updates from Darren each day, and today marked the seventh day.
Just when he thought everything had been forgotten, an unexpected piece of news arrived.
“Alberto, we’ve located a woman named Raelynn Elway! The latest info we have shows she was last spotted in Couhgan about five months ago, leaving with a child. Her whereabouts after that are unclear, and the trail seems to have vanished.”
After hanging up with Darren, Alberto sat back in his chair, deep in thought.
Raelynn left Couhgan five months ago, while Kendrick arrived nearly three months ago.
This meant that for the past three months, he hadn’t realized that Raelynn had already gone.
Since he hadn’t suspected anything about the child previously, it could be assumed that Kendrick likely didn’t realize she had left with the child:
Therefore, Alberto had to find her before Kendrick did!
But where could she have gone?
He shut his eyes slowly, lost in deep thought and recollections.
The minutes ticked by in silence.
Then, suddenly, his eyes shot open, a spark of realization lighting up his gaze!
He had figured it out.
One month later, Astua.
A young woman dressed in maternity clothes stepped out of the elevator and made her way toward her small apartment. Raelynn bent down to search for the keys in her bag when her gaze accidentally met a pair of polished leather shoes. She immediately apologized, instinctively stepping aside.
But just as she moved a few steps, a familiar voice called out from behind her, “Raelynn.”
At the sound of the voice, Raelynn froze. She slowly furrowed her brows, almost in disbelief, before turning around to look. Alberto observed her face, which had grown thinner and more tanned after their time apart. It no longer had the same innocent and radiant quality as before, and the wear of life’s experiences was now evident in her eyes.
“Alberto? Is it really you?”
Raelynn stared at the man in shock, unable to believe her eyes.
No one knew she had come to Astua, so how did he know she was here?
“Raelynn, I traveled through several countries just to find you. Aren’t you going to invite me in for a bit?” Alberto said with a smile.
Raelynn felt a little embarrassed, quickly pressing her lips together as she opened the door.
“Come in, please. I’ll grab you some water.”
Once Alberto stepped inside, he looked around the small apartment. It was compact, but everything was neat and well–kept.

He settled on the couch, and soon she returned with a glass of water.
“Let me do it.”
His gaze shifted to her noticeable belly, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Raelynn, how have you been managing on your own these past few months?”
Raelynn pressed her lips together, answering nonchalantly, “Just getting by. Plenty of people live alone in this world, so why shouldn’t I?”
“But you’re still pregnant.”
“Alberto, this isn’t my first time,” Raelynn responded.
Her words left Alberto’s concerns unspoken, but a deep ache settled in his chest.
How could he forget that the woman before him had once carried a child in prison for ten long months?
Yet, the more composed and indifferent she seemed, the more his heart ached.
How much despair must one go through to become so detached, to carry on without any sense of pain?
Noticing the tension in the air, Raelynn cleared her throat and asked with curiosity, “By the way, Alberto, how did you find out I was here?”
“You mentioned it to me before.”
“I did?” Raelynn frowned, genuinely puzzled, unable to recall it.
