5 Chapter 5
Jennifer froze for a second, but she quickly composed herself and answered calmly, “Dr. Miles and I are in here processing a Jane Doe. Are there no other treatment rooms available, Cas?” Lying on the surgical bed, I opened my mouth to scream, but the slightest movement of my facial muscles sent searing pain through my wounds. I didn’t dare move.
“It’s fine. I was just asking,” Caspian said.
Jennifer was a completely different person when she spoke to Caspian. Gone was the arrogant, abusive woman I had seen. Now, she was sweet and demure, fabricating excuses. Finally, she added, “When I’m done here, I want to go shopping with you.”
“Alright. I need to go to the LEGO store anyway, to buy a Death Star set as a gift.”
Even though I couldn’t see Caspian’s face, I knew he was smiling.
A few days ago, Leo had clung to Caspian’s arm, saying that since he was almost seven, he wanted a “big boy” gift.
Caspian had nodded, poking Leo’s forehead as he asked him what he wanted.
With all the confidence a seven–year–old could muster, Leo had declared he wanted a LEGO Death Star.
A single tear slid from the corner of my eye.
That was only a few days ago. Now, Leo was gone.
Caspian and Leo were incredibly close. I couldn’t imagine how devastated Caspian would be when he found out about Leo’s death.
Lost in my grief, I didn’t notice the flash of cruelty in Jennifer’s eyes when Caspian mentioned buying the gift.
Caspian left. He had no idea that on the other side of the door, his girlfriend was torturing his
. mother.
Jennifer glared at me. “You bitch! I never thought you’d be more cunning than I imagined. How could you make Caspian talk about buying a gift for his bastard son in front of me?”
“Thank god that bastard is dead. Otherwise, I can’t imagine how frustrated I’d be with him getting in the way of our marriage.”
She gritted her teeth. Then, as if a thought struck her, her gaze drifted to the lower half of my body.
“I have to solve this problem once and for all,” she muttered to herself. “Killing one bastard isn’t

enough. What if you have more bastards behind my back?”
She seemed completely lost in her own thoughts, muttering, “Yes! I’m so smart. I have to cut it off at the root. Killing one bastard isn’t enough. I have to make it so this bitch can never have
another one.”
“But no. If I kill someone, I won’t be able to marry Caspian with a clean slate.”
Even now, she was still thinking about marrying Caspian.
As long as I was alive, she would never marry him, even if I had to disown Caspian to make him see the truth.
“I’ll just sew her up. Yes, I’m a genius! No wonder Caspian loves me so much.”
Jennifer smiled shyly again. Then, her expression turned vicious, and she advanced on me.
I had been beaten before, and now, lying naked and bound to the surgical bed, I had no strength left to fight back.
Still, I tried to reason with her. “Jennifer, stop. I’m not Caspian’s mistress. I’m his mother. Let me go!” I screamed as Jennifer pierced my skin with a surgical needle.
Every stitch was agony. The pain was so intense it made my scalp tingle. Eventually, I didn’t even have the strength to speak.
“Now, no more little bastards will ever be born. Caspian will be mine and mine alone. The Hawthorne family fortune and this hospital will all belong to my son!” Jennifer laughed loudly.
Just then, there was a frantic kn “On the door. “Jennifer, who’s in there? I just saw Dr. Miles
outside. He said he doesn’t have any procedures scheduled right now. Who’s in there?”

When Jennifer didn’t answer, Caspian panicked and kicked the door open.
