2 Chapter 2
The sapphire set was our family’s most precious heirloom.
The cufflinks and the pendant were a matching pair. I had given the cufflinks to Caspian to one day give to his other half. The pendant was for Leo when he grew up. For now, I was keeping it safe for him.
Clearly, Jennifer had misunderstood everything.
She hysterically ripped the necklace from my neck. “You liar, Caspian Hawthorne! You told me you only loved me! How could you cheat on me with this old hag?”
“I hate you! I hate you!”
She began talking to herself like a madwoman. “My
heart is breaking, but I can’t stop loving you.”
Then, her gaze turned sinister. “If they died, then nothing would stand in our way.”
“Yes. That’s it!”
She took out her phone and dialed a number. A moment later, I heard her say, “Deacon, you have to help me protect what’s mine!”
I had no time for her insanity.
I crawled back to Leo’s gurney, staring in horror at his rapidly worsening color.
“Please, save my son!” I pleaded with the remaining staff. “H anaphylactic shock! If you don’t help him now, he’ll die!” Other medical staff tried to reason with Jennifer. Just let We should just get him into the ER.”

- go. If the kid dies, this will blow up.
Jennifer scoffed, her eyes like daggers as she scanned them. “Are you sure you want to side with this gold–digging whore?”
“Don’t forget, Caspian’s father controls this entire medical group. Once I marry into the Hawthorne family, I’ll be the one deciding your careers.”
Hearing this, the staff exchanged uneasy glances, then quietly dispersed, pretending to be busy with other tasks.
“Jennifer, please,” I begged, kneeling on the floor. “Let my son into the emergency room. He’s dying!”
Her expression was glacial, her eyes filled with malice. “That’s the point. I want him to die. Only When he’s dead will he stop being an obstacle for us after we’re married!”
“I don’t want this bastard in our lives. I don’t want to be a stepmother.”

“My son isn’t Caspian’s bastard,” I explained frantically. “He’s his brother.”

Jennifer kicked me hard in the chest. “You keep calling him ‘your son, and now you’re telling me this mutt is my man’s brother?”
“That’s ridiculous. What are you going to tell me next? That you’re Caspian’s mother?”
I nodded immediately. “Yes! I am Caspian’s mother. His birth mother.”
A flicker of confusion crossed Jennifer’s face. She stared at me, unblinking.
Just then, the hospital doors were thrown open.
A group of men stormed in, brandishing bats. The blond man in the lead yelled, “Who’s the bitch trying to steal my sister’s man?”
I was still kneeling on the ground, my cheeks swollen, my clothes in disarray.
Jennifer stood before me, her face a grim mask. “It’s her, Deacon,” she said. “And now she’s telling me she’s Caspian’s mother.”
Deacon Sinclair snorted. He looked me up and down, his voice dripping with contempt. “If she’s Mrs. Hawthorne, then I’m the King of Wall Street! She’s just trying to scare you, Jennifer.”
Her brief confusion vanished. “Thank god you’re here, Deacon! Otherwise, I might have actually been fooled by this old mistress!”
She strode toward me and slapped me again and again.
My ears were ringing, but I didn’t dare move away. “Please, save my son. Save my son. I’m begging you,” I pleaded over and over.
Suddenly, a cruel glint appeared in her eyes. “Alright. If you take off your shirt and slap yourself, I’ll save him. You have to do it on camera, while saying you’re a pathetic gold digger, and apologize to me.”
“Say you never should have gotten between me and Caspian!”
