Chapter 97
“Yours. Which is why I need to tell you something you won’t want to hear. You need professional help. What happened to Ethan…it’s too much for anyone to bear alone for so long.”
There was that damn silence again.
He’s upset with us. We should make it right. Lucky was getting worried.
I opened my mouth to speak, but Aaron beat me to it.
“Thank you.” His words caught me off guard. “For doing this for me.”
It definitely wasn’t what I expected him to say.
“Aaron…”
“No, let me finish. My feelings for you…they’re growing by the day, Jane. I think that’s part of what makes this so hard. I don’t want you to see me as broken.” He sighed. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”
The line went dead before I could say anything, leaving me staring at my phone. This was going to be a lot harder than I thought. How could I help the one person who only knew how to help others and not himself?
Aaron deserved to heal. I truly believed that he deserved to find the way back to the man he’d been before all this grief.
And I would be here for it all, no matter how long it took.

I think my life was evidence that the universe isn’t fair to good people. All I’d done was love Jane and try to win her back. Yet, I was being punished. What did I ever do to deserve a bloody cancer scare?
I touched the scar on my chest, a habit I picked up since they carved it into my chest a week ago. Now, I sat in my car outside the hospital, ready to get my test results. But there was someone I had to see first.
I glanced out of the car window, searching for the familiar custom- made red Range Rover…a car I paid for. Left to me, I wouldn’t see this person again, but Jane hadn’t left me with any other choices.
My gaze drifted to my phone. Jane’s contact was still open. Three missed calls to her today, twelve yesterday. And that was why I kept looking out, waiting for the devil to show up.
I knew her methods were…questionable. I was willing to overlook that when I recruited her to help me win my wife back. I wasn’t entirely sure why I eliminated her from the plan. Perhaps it was because every time I opened my phone to call her, her name was sandwiched between my attorney and financial advisor.
Or perhaps, it was because she looked so much like my wife that it hurt.
My wolf still hadn’t recovered ever since Jane left me. Yes, I did say I wanted a divorce, and yes, I threatened her. But Jane knew me better than anyone. She should have known I didn’t mean any of that. I loved her. I would never do anything to hurt her.
I never asked for much. All I wanted was a friend. Someone to be there when I was falling apart, someone who could at least pick up the phone when I called.

I was distracted by the red Range Rover. It drove by, stopping just in front of my car. She stepped out, dressed in an outrageous multi- colored dress that went all the way up to her neck, paired with a hat that was just as ridiculous.
If not for the almost costume–like regalia, my wolf would have wept at the sight of her. My Jane would never dress like that; that was one of the many reasons why I loved her.
My passenger door flew open, and she slid into the seat with grace. Her perfume filled the space…strong and unpleasant.
“Well, it’s been a really long time, son–in–law,” Helena gloated as she took off her sunglasses. “What do you want?”
My mouth felt like it was full of cotton. My wolf retreated, my confidence gone. I could feel her staring at me, waiting explanation. But as seconds ticked by, I still couldn’t speak.
I sucked in a breath. “I might have cancer.
“J
“Possible or confirmed?” Her voice lacked the warmth I expected to
hear.
“No. Not confirmed.”
“So, you called me here because you might be sick? What exactly do you expect from me, Xander? Money for treatment? A shoulder to cry on? Because if it’s money you’re after…”
“I don’t need your fucking money,” I cut her off.
“Then what?”
