Chapter 94
And without warning, she began to shift.
Within seconds, a massive black wolf stood in her place. She snatched the bag with her teeth, turned and bolted.
“Damn it.”
Let me, Lucky surged forward. I dropped my bag and began a transformation of my own. Lucky took over, her brown fur expanding as she emerged fully. She grabbed my bag with her teeth and with Yve‘ s scent already memorized, we went after her.
*Jane*
Faster, I urged Lucky as we followed Yve through the yard, grass scratching at our fur. We’re losing her.
This is as fast as I can go, Lucky panted back. You haven’t let me out in a very long time. My limbs are stiff, deteriorating from disuse. I’m not at full strength.
Every time we managed to close the distance between us and her wolf, she would glance back over her and speed up.
Just when I thought we might have to give up, Yve suddenly turned sharply to the right, disappearing into what looked like a narrow alley between two buildings.
There! Lucky surged forward with strength I didn’t know we still had. She’s trapped herself.

The alley was lined with dumpsters and scattered debris from the decaying buildings on either side. I could see Yve’s wolf at the far end.
With our target locked in, Lucky pushed even harder, paws hitting concrete. We were so focused on Yve that neither of us saw the pile of broken glass and metal until it was too late.
My front paw caught on one of the pieces and suddenly the world was spinning. Lucky yelped as we went down hard. The force of our fall pushed us forward, causing us to roll across the pavement.
When we finally came to a stop, I felt warm, trembling fur pressed against me. I looked to the side. Both of our bags were at different parts of the alley, contents scattered across the ground.
Careful, Lucky warned. She’s scared. Wolves bite when backed into a
corner.
Then tell her I’m not going to hurt her. I just want to talk. Lucky’s ears flicked forward and I felt her reach out to Yve’s wolf.
For several seconds, Yve remained stiff against us. But gradually, her posture began to ease up. She finally let out a sigh and flopped onto her side.
I began to shift back to human form. The transformation left me naked, the jeans and cashmere sweater I’d been wearing was long gone now. I glanced around and noticed a clothesline with several pieces of female clothing hanging out to dry between two fire escapes above us. I didn’t leave immediately. First, I reached across the pavement and grabbed my lipstick that had spilled out of my bag.
Moving quickly before anyone could see me, I climbed onto a dumpster and reached up to grab what I could; two over–sized t–shirts and two pairs of jeans that were probably ill–fitted.

As I pulled the clothes on, I popped the lipstick open and scrawled my phone number on a piece of cardboard I found nearby: “Borrowed clothes for emergency. Please call for compensation. Sorry! – Jane” I tucked it securely underneath a clothespin and turned back.
When I returned to Yve, she was still in wolf form, watching me carefully. “It’s okay,” I said softly, holding out the extra t–shirt. “You can shift back. I won’t hurt you, I promise.”
She hesitated for a moment, but then shifted back to human form. I quickly handed her the shirt and jeans which she put on with shaking hands.
Yve didn’t speak as she began to gather her scattered items. I bent down to do the same, throwing not–so–discreet glances at the stuff she was picking up.
Once my bag was intact, I turned to her. “Let me help,” I said, moving to collect what had rolled under a dumpster. My fingers retrieved a small bag of rice with a torn corner. The other items I helped gather were just as meager. A couple of apples that had clearly seen better days and what might have been a banana but was now more brown than yellow.
“What do you want from me?” she asked once the items were safely tucked away in the bag.
“I need to talk to you.”

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “There’s a cafe a blocks from here,” she said finally, not meeting my eyes. “We can talk there. But I need to get these home first.”
