I expected him to try to change the subject, but instead he sighed and continued massaging my scalp. “Well, you know we were separated for some time before we finally started the divorce proceedings.” He sighed. “I was supposed to pick Ethan up from Kindergarten that day. But when I got there, his teacher told me Yve had already picked him up.”

“I called her, over and over. She never answered.” He swallowed hard. “A couple hours later, I got the call about the accident.”
My heart clenched as I watched him struggle with the words. His teeth were gritted so tightly I could hear them grinding together. I could feel his wolf whimpering in pain at the memory.

“I wanted to ask her why. Why did she take him that day, why didn’t she answer her phone, why was she driving so bloody fast.” His hand left my hair, falling into the water. “But she refused to explain. Maybe now she’s willing to talk.”
I reached for his hand beneath the water and intertwined my fingers with his. “I’ll ask her.”
He stared at me for a long moment, then brought my hand up to his lips. “Thank you.”

I nodded, even though I didn’t feel so confident. This definitely meant a lot to him. And while I would do everything within my power to get those answers, The thought of failing him, of coming back empty- handed, made my stomach twist with anxiety.

Three days later, I found myself standing on a cracked sidewalk, staring at what could only be described as a house on the verge of death. The address David had given me led to a two–story that might have been white once. The roof sagged and there was garbage scattered across the overgrown yard.
But that wasn’t all. There were long, deep wolf claw marks etched into the walls.
This couldn’t be right. I distinctly remember Aaron saying Yve’s parents had enough money to make miracles happen. But this place looked like where rogues would hole up.
I pulled out my phone and dialed the number David had provided, but it went straight to voicemail again. Every instinct screamed at me to turn around and leave. This was a bad idea, coupled with the terrible intel.
But when I thought about Aaron, the pain in his voice, the hollow look in his eyes, I couldn’t bring myself to leave. I had to see this through.
I finally worked up enough courage to move. I raised my fist and knocked firmly.
I heard tiny footsteps approaching from inside, and the door opened to reveal a little girl who looked to be about eight or nine years old. She was as thin as a stick, a faded pink dress that might have been pretty now torn and stained with dirt.
Somehow, I managed a mile at the little girl and crouched down to her level. “I’m looking for Yve. Is she here?”
The girl’s eyes narrowed with a wickedness that made my stomach turn.

No child should look that calculating. She held out her small hand, palm up. “Money first.”
My mouth fell open. “Excuse me?”
“You want information, you pay for it.”
Against my better judgment, I pulled out my wallet and placed a ten- dollar bill in her dirty palm.
She looked down at it in disgust. “More.”
I added another ten. Then another. By the time I’d handed over a hundred and twenty dollars, I was questioning my sanity.
“Yve’s not in,” she said finally.
I had to control my anger. How could a child be so infuriating? “Not in? That’s what I just paid over a hundred dollars to…”
“But she’s there,” the girl interrupted, pointing over my shoulder.
I turned around, and my breath caught in my throat. Walking up the sidewalk, was one of the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. She was tall and willowy, with long brown hair that made her look like an ethereal creature. Even from a distance, I could see the elegant line of her neck, the graceful way she moved. She held a large grocery bag, and the way she carried it, it looked like a luxurious item.
“Yve?” I called out, taking a step toward her.
The woman’s head snapped up at the sound of her name, and for a split second, our eyes met. Hers were bright green with a wild tinge in them. Then I saw a flash of something that made Lucky stir.
