Chapter 88
My eyes drifted to Bonnie and Diana. I should have known they came here with bad news. The twins were never voluntarily quiet. And
Jane… Only a few hours ago, she had no idea I had a son, and now she had to deal with this news as well.
I finally found my voice. “How… how do you even know this?”
“Mom told me.”
Of course it was Mom. Dad would never have been the one to spread news like this. His wolf was seriously tight–lipped. He hoarded information, especially about anything that might cause pain to his children.
Jane wasn’t saying anything. Her eyes met mine every so often, but I couldn’t quite read her expression.
“Aaron?” Cathe said, pulling my attention back to her. “Are you okay? You’re not saying much of anything.”
My body was still in that room, but my mind wasn’t. Fen had gone eerily quiet. With my wolf withdrawn, it felt like a part of my strength had left me. If I didn’t know better, I’d think I was having an out–of- body experience.
“Aaron… Do you understand what I’m saying? Yve is out of Silver Fang prison. She’s staying with a relative. Somewhere isolated from what I gathered.” She groaned and rubbed a hand over her face. “I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear, much less today. I’m sorry.”

I barely heard her. My vision faded to black. In my head, I and Fen were running far away from here, through the woods. It was too much for us to deal with, so we gathered our strength and ran.
“Aaron?”
Fen picked up speed, rushing through the woods. He sniffed… there was no Yve here.
“Aaron!”
My eyes widened… I couldn’t breathe. I was back in my room, hand over my chest. My sisters rushed to me, eyes wide in fear.
“He’s having a panic attack,” I heard Jane say.
I shook my head, took multiple deep threats. I needed to calm myself. But I couldn’t shake the familiar sensation of pain clawing at my chest. Five years. Damn it.
Fen howled inside my head. She stole our son’s life and served only five herself. Where is the justice in that?
The next person to speak was Cathe. “It’s going to be okay, Aaron. You‘ re okay.”
I squeezed my eyes shut and focused on Fen’s energy to help me calm down. I’m not one to be pitied. I’m the Alpha of this pack damn it. How could I let them see me this vulnerable?
When I opened my eyes, Cathe gasped and stepped back, stumbling into Bonnie and Diana.
“Everyone out,” I roared. “Now.”

The three of them retreated. But Jane remained. She closed the door behind her and leaned against the wood. “I’m not going anywhere.”
I didn’t argue. I needed her, but I had no energy to let myself lean on her. Instead, I dragged myself to the edge of my bed, sitting hunched over with my head in my hands.
Weakness flooded through me, so deep it felt like poison. I couldn’t even force myself to raise my head and look into Jane’s eyes. I desperately wanted to, but my body suddenly felt so heavy.
Jane didn’t come closer. She didn’t offer any words either. She just waited patiently, giving me the space I needed to pull myself together.
Minutes passed, maybe even more. But I finally raised my head and looked at her. She offered me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“I must look completely insane to you right now.
She shook her head. “You just look human.”
“She killed my three year old son, Jane.” I hunched over once more, holding my head tightly. “He was… he was still breathing when the ambulance arrived. He was still fighting. But the head trauma was too severe. They couldn’t save him.” Jane’s breath hitched and I saw her own eyes fill with tears. “And now she’s free. How is that possible?”
Jane finally moved from her spot against the door. She stopped a few inches away from me. “You need to contact an attorney. Find out why she was released early, what your options are. There has to be some legal recourse.”
I let out a bitter laugh. “I can barely remember the name of the attorney that handled her case. David recommended him.”
