Chapter 84
He deserved more than just this divorce. I subconsciously found myself navigating to one of the gossip sites that had published stories about my marriage. What if I revealed everything to them?
Lucky stirred at the back of my mind. Do it. He deserves it. His mother would do the same to you.
He’s not his mother.
Yes, but this is what he deserves after everything he’s done to us. The world should know the truth about him.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Especially after the interview today. I’d promised to keep myself away from scandal. Doing this would be inviting unnecessary publicity into my life.
I shut the laptop.
My phone rang again, and this time, the name on the screen made me smile.
“Hey, you.”
“Hey… just checking in about the interview.”
My brows furrowed slightly. Aaron didn’t sound like himself. I shook it off. He was probably just exhausted.
“It went great… I really think I’ll be hearing back soon. But you won’t believe what happened. Mia finally sent over video footage of herself

and Xander in a very compromising position.”
There was an unusual silence on the other end. “Congratulations. I’m glad that’s about to be sorted out soon.
My frown deepened. Something was awfully wrong. “Aaron? Are you okay?”
“Yes.” He sighed. “Just tired.”
“Are you sure? You sound… weird.”
He sighed again, heavily this time. “I need to see you, Jane. I know we shouldn’t because the court sitting for your divorce is only two weeks away, but I just really need to see you.
The desperation in his voice tugged at my heart strings. I wanted to drop everything and run to him. But he was right. It wouldn’t be wise.
“It’s just…” he took a deep breath. “Today is the fifth anniversary of my son’s death.”
Wait… what?
“There’s a huge crowd here, mostly close friends and family, trying to console me. But it just feels so overwhelming,” he continued, but I was still stuck on the mention of a son.
I knew he was married before, but I didn’t know there were children in the mix. Lucky whimpered in pain. I couldn’t stay away from him now when he needed me the most. My heart couldn’t take it anymore.
“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”
“No, Jane. You don’t have to…”

“I want to. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” I didn’t even bother changing as I grabbed my keys and headed out the door. “So… want to keep me company as I drive to you?”
*Jane*
My knuckles had gone bone–white against the steering wheel. I could feel the blood draining from my face, but I tried to sound optimistic as I spoke to Aaron.
“I just wish everyone would leave, you know? I want to be alone with you.”
“I’m sure we can get some privacy,” I said. Those were filler words. What do you say to someone whose child has died?
I don’t know, Lucky responded. We can just try to be there for him.
I stayed on the phone with him until I arrived at his home. “I’m here. I’ll see you in a minute,” I said before hanging up.
Lucky swiftly picked up on loud bursts of laughter, conversations in multiple languages… English, Spanish and what sounded like
Portuguese. A baby’s cry pierced through all the noise, slightly muffled by the sound of a television drama playing.
I rushed out of the car and into the familiar living room. And Lord, Aaron hadn’t been exaggerating. His house was filled to the brim with people.
A toddler ran past my legs as I stepped in, chasing what looked like his older brother. A group of people were playing a card game at the dining table, and others looked more somber than the rest.
My eyes found George sitting in his wheelchair in his usual spot. I

should have known he was the one watching television. Right beside him was a young woman who couldn’t have been older than twenty–five cradling a baby against her shoulder.
She looked oddly familiar. She had Aaron’s blue eyes, but her hair was more brown than his raven black. On the floor at George’s feet, two teenage girls with similar brown hair sat cross–legged wearing identical purple sweaters. Definitely twins.
I looked around. Aaron was nowhere in sight, and everyone seemed to be oblivious to my presence. I cleared my throat.
