I lingered behind Jane as she spoke to the nurse at the desk. The middle–aged woman in scrubs held a clipboard, running Jane through the routine questions. Her voice sounded calm, but she was visibly trembling again.
“What’s your relationship to the patient?” The nurse asked.
Jane’s gaze darted to me for a second, as if checking to see if I was okay with it. I nodded at her. “Wife,” she answered.
Even though it was technically still true, there was a stab of pain in my heart.
“Legal full name?”
She went through the rest of the form, providing as much information as possible. My ears perked up when I heard her list Mia as his emergency contact.
After about thirty minutes, Jane returned to me quietly. I wrapped one hand around her shoulder and led her out. We didn’t get far when she stopped walking.
“I wanted him to die,” she announced suddenly. “Isn’t that horrible? I mean… really, truly. I saw him go down, and all I could think, was finally. What kind of person thinks that?”
I squeezed her shoulder, then leaned in to place a kiss on her forehead. I brushed her cheek with my thumb. “You’re not evil. You’re just human. This is just the consequences of his actions. It has nothing to

do with how you feel.”
“I kind of hate him.” Jane looked away. I tried to bring her face back to mine, but she resisted. “No… I don’t want you to see the disdain in my eyes. You’re just so… perfect.”
“Perfect?” I scoffed dramatically, causing Jane’s features to ease. Good. “One day I’ll get drunk and tell you all the ways I’m not perfect. We’ll make a whole damn night out of it.
*Jane*
”
I stared at my reflection in the full–length mirror. The black blazer and cream silk blouse I chose fit perfectly.
My phone buzzed. I looked down to see a text from Aaron: You can do this. They’ll be lucky to have you. I smiled despite myself. Yes, he’d gotten me the interview, but he’d managed to keep himself from meddling even further. I appreciated that.
He said it was a coincidence they had a CMO opening at Ominent’s New York division…. By that he meant a friend there. I’d already made it through the first round of virtual interviews two days ago. It had been an hour and forty–five minutes of eye rolls and polite smirks.
For a luxury department store chain that ranked 3rd in the world, they sure knew how to make their interviewees squirm. I’d expected an instant rejection, but I received a mail last night inviting me for another round of interviews.
Now here I was, fussing with my blazer.
Listen to Aaron. You’ve got this. Just remember to be confident, Lucky said. I let her aura surround me. I was going to have to lean on my wolf s strength for this one.

I glanced once more in the mirror. Then I grabbed my coat and bag, squared my shoulders, and walked out the door.
Even with Lucky’s energy surrounding me, my fingers still trembled slightly as I gripped the wheel. My nerves were beginning to take control of me. To soothe myself, I put on some soothing tunes, letting it wash over me as I drove through the large iron gates.
I’d just begun to relax when my phone began to ring. Don’t look, we need to keep our head in the game, Lucky urged. Subconsciously, I looked over to see Mia’s name lighting up my phone screen.
I turned the volume down, tapped to answer on speaker, then hit the voice memo app and started recording without a word.
“Hello, Jane.”
“Mia… to what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I sent it. Everything you asked for. But…” Mia continued. “I think he’s starting to get suspicious. He might find out. And I would leave but, you know… the baby.”
I stopped at a red light. “That’s a cross you have to bear, Mia. You shouldn’t have cheated on him then.”
“Please, Jane. I did what you asked. You can’t let anyone find out about that. I even sleep in a separate room from Xander. Please, Amelia can never know what happened. She’ll destroy me.”
I scoffed. “Are you actually pregnant, Mia?”
Mia gasped. “Of course, I am. I wouldn’t lie about that.”
The light finally turned green and I moved.
“I just picked Xander up from the hospital,” Mia continued.
