Chapter 80
I watched as Jane’s lips pressed into a thin line. She brushed past me, eyes fixed on Xander’s car. She pulled open the driver’s side door and yanked the tag off the windshield. And then, she tossed the tag onto the gravel.
“Access revoked,” she muttered, meeting his gaze. “You don’t get to just walk in whenever you want anymore.”
She has become so much stronger… I’m proud of her, my wolf said.
Me too, I love seeing her take charge.
I didn’t spare Xander another glance as I took Jane’s hand. We’d just turned toward the house when we heard a loud thud.
I blinked when I saw what was happening. “Xander? What…?”
Xander had dropped to his knees in the middle of the driveway, face white, one hand clawing at his chest, the other scrabbling at the ground.
“Don’t,” I heard Jane say. I could sense her wolf, perfectly calm. “Don’t even try it. I’m not in the mood for one of your dramatic stunts.”
But Xander couldn’t even respond. His head tilted back, face pinched in pain, and his lips parted slightly as he gasped for breath.
And then he collapsed completely.
Oh no.

“Shit.” I ran to him, crouching by his side. His skin had gone ghost- pale. Sweat I had neither seen nor sniffed out before now clung to his hairline. “He’s not faking, Jane.” Jane froze. She stared at Xander’s unconscious body, face blank and unreadable. “Hey,” I called, in a firmer voice. “We need to get him to a hospital.”
She finally pulled herself together and rushed toward me.
“Let me help,” Grant said before hoisting Xander up and hauling him into the backseat. I slid into the passenger seat and Jane got behind the wheel, fingers trembling as they gripped it.
“Are you okay?” I asked when she started driving.
Her eyes stayed locked on the road as if she needed that consistency to keep her from falling apart. “I didn’t have the heart attack.”
“That’s not what I’m asking.”
Jane clutched the wheel even tighter and I thought she’d just shut down again, but then she sighed. “Why does he always do this? It’s like… he has this radar for my joy. And the second he senses it, he has to come crash through. I mean, if he’s going to die, why the hell does it have to be at my house? He keeps trying to draw me back in.”
She drew in a long breath. “He’s never going to let me go.”
She needs you to help her. She’s strong, but all of this is too much for her, my wolf said to me.
I want to, but I’m not sure what she needs right now.
You. She needs you.
“Hey…” I dropped my hand to her thigh, rubbing slowly. “He won’t die.

He’s an Alpha, remeber?” I glanced at Xander. He was still
unconscious, and still ghostly pale. “His wolf wouldn’t let him go out like this.”
Jane didn’t respond. Just stared ahead.
Xander really ruined what would have been a perfect night.
I know, damn it.
Jane is right about one thing. He definitely doesn’t want her to be happy. I couldn’t help but agree with my wolf. Deep down, I wondered if this was all a performance. But, better safe than sorry.
An ambulance was already waiting near the entrance of the hospital when we arrived. Grant must’ve called ahead. The EMTs rushed toward us before the engine fully died.
My wolf detected the faint sound of sobbing before I even noticed. When he alerted me, I turned to see Jane sitting, tears streaming down her face.
I rushed out of the car. When I reached her side, I opened the door gently and pulled her into me. Jane melted into my arms. I wrapped them tightly around her as the sobs came in full force.
I buried a hand in her hair. “It’s okay. I’ve got you. You’re not alone.”
I hate that she’s like this because of Xander, my wolf whined in jealousy. I shared his sentiment. Yes, I was going to be there for Jane no matter what and I knew she wasn’t crying because she loved him. Still, it wasn’t entertaining to watch him constantly wiggle his way
back into her life.
The EMTs pulled Xander from the back seat and strapped him to a
