Chapter 73
But she ignored me, ripping it open. Her eyes lit up as she scanned the page. “Oh… this is rich. A resignation letter.”
My heart stopped. She wouldn’t do this to us, would she? my wolf, Fen asked me. But I didn’t have an answer for him. I was out of my seat in an instant. “Give it to me.”
But she didn’t. She clutched the paper tighter and kept reading aloud. Words like, ‘a safer working environment,‘ ‘a welcoming team,‘ jumped at me. There was no mention of me in the letter, but I knew she was thinking of me still.
Look what you’ve done, Fen said. You did this. And now our mate is gone. A part of us is gone. How would we live with that?
And as Fen was scolding me, mother didn’t stop gloating.
“You can stop waiting by the phone now. She’s made her choice. It’s permanent this time. You should take this as a sign and move on too.”
“Why?” I whispered at first, but my voice rose with every single syllable. “Why do you take so much pleasure in my pain?”
Mother rolled her eyes and settled back into her seat. “I don’t. Everything I do is for your own good. You should be more grateful to me.”
pinched the bridge of my nose again. This woman was going to give me a bloody migraine. Feeling hollowed out, I moved back to my chair, hands on my desk.

That’s when I noticed Mia turning to leave.
“Wait,” my mother called out. Mia froze mid–step. Her eyes swept over her carefully, taking in her disheveled state. “Why did you give him the letter?”
Mia turned slightly, eyes darting between me and Mother. She folded her hands tightly in front of her. “She left it with me.”
“Right. But why didn’t Jane hand it to him herself? She had no reason to hand it to you.”
Mia hesitated, then looked down. “I don’t know.”
Mother’s eyes narrowed. “And you look terrible. You barely brushed your hair, your blouse is wrinkled and not buttoned properly. Your voice is shaking, and yet you accepted a letter from Jane… Jane, of all people. You’ve never liked her.”
She rose to her feet again, pinning her gaze on Mia. “Now, you should tell me the truth. What really happened?”
*Xander*
Mia clenched her fists at her side and glared at my mother. “Maybe Jane gave me the letter because I’m Xander’s beta and executive assistant. She knows I’m the fastest way to get to him.”
I watched as my mother arched a brow. “Well, as a secretary, why exactly are you in his office during your lunch break?”
Mia blinked. “Are you serious?”
Mother gave her a thin–lipped smile. “Just curious. Most people eat during lunch, not follow their boss around like a love–sick pup.”

“It’s none of your business.”
“This company is my business. So you, child, also answer to me.”
I could smell Mia’s anger, but it was nothing compared to the scent of calm contempt that surrounded Mother. I sighed as I rose to my feet. “I‘ m leaving early.” They both turned toward me. Mother’s mouth parted like she might object, but when she saw the flash of red in my eyes and noticed how I was trying to keep Fen from taking over, she looked
away.
I turned to Mia. “Come with me.” I crossed the room in two strides and grabbed Mia’s hand.
“It’s still a couple of hours before the workday ends, Xander,” I heard my mother say. “Stop being dramatic and sit down.”
I felt Mia’s fingers stiffen in mine. Fen wasn’t having it either. He growled angrily, causing me to turn to my mother with raging red eyes. “I am your Alpha, your boss. Don’t forget that.” I didn’t waste another
moment.
“Have fun you two,” she called after us. “Maybe make another one of your little lower–class pups while you’re at it.”
As soon as we stepped into the hallway and the door clicked shut behind us, Mia turned to me.
“I’m sorry, but that woman is evil,” she snapped. “She talks about your child like they’re a curse.” I said nothing, dropping her hand so I could clench mine into fists, my claws digging into my palms.
“I don’t get it, Xander. How do you deal with that? How have you been dealing with that your whole life?”
