Chapter 72
It’s been well and truly exhausting. Even my wolf felt the change in power, he cowered slightly whenever she was in the room which made me resent her even more.
I looked up at my mother, sitting in my office. My anger was rising. She called it helping. It was obviously a takeover.
“I would appreciate some privacy, mother,” I said, managing to keep my tone neutral.
“Well, Xander, your bad behavior has caused me to sacrifice my own time so I can monitor your every move as if you’re a horny teenager. I wouldn’t want you to run off to Mia’s office and get… busy, during working hours.”
“I can’t take this anymore. You’re trying to control everything. You forced me and Mia to move in with you, even though you’ve made it clear how much you despise her. You went behind my back and sued Jane after I told you repeatedly that I didn’t want a divorce.”
She opened her mouth to speak, but I held up a hand. “Don’t interrupt me. You bullied Jane repeatedly, and now because of you, she won’t answer any of my calls. And… you singlehandedly ruined a significant partnership with this company and managed to blame it on me.”
“Xander… you did that all on your own. All I’ve done is clean up the mess that you created. And please, you need to forget about Jane, even I can see that’s a lost cause,” she said while rolling her eyes.
My wolf went crazy at the mention of Jane. She’s my mate, damn it.

We’re supposed to be together, not apart. “No. You don’t know that. Jane will come back to me. I’ll win her back eventually.” I narrowed my eyes at her as a sudden realization hit me. “Hold on… did you… Did you leak the divorce proceedings to the press? I mean, I wouldn’t put it past you. I’m sure you wanted to speed things up by accusing Jane of being controlling and abusive.”
“Oh, please,” she scoffed. “I told you, that relationship is six feet under. You better focus all your energy on how to save the company. This is not the time for personal issues.”
I pinched the bridge of my nose. God… this woman was nothing short of insufferable. “You have no right to tell me what to do.”
“I do, when you constantly insist on disgracing the Blackwood name. It‘ s truly appalling Xander, that after I’ve expressed my disdain for the woman, you still choose to play house with her. You must put an end to that at once. I will file for custody, of course, as soon as the baby is born.” She finally looked up from the envelope in her hands and then at me. “If I wasn’t clear, your relationship with Mia is highly disgraceful.”
I drummed my fingers against the desk. It was the only thing keeping my wolf from snapping out of control and breaking the chair in half. But it wasn’t just anger I felt. I felt like I was all alone, with no one in
my corner.
I ran a hand down my face. Why… God, why have I been saddled with a mother such as Amelia Blackwood?
There was a short knock on the door, drawing my mother’s attention away from me. “Come in,” she instructed, as if this were her office and not mine.
Mia stepped into the room, clothes slightly rugged, hair disheveled, but

I waved it off. There was a brown envelope in her hand as she approached. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
I straightened. “You’re not interrupting. What’s that?”
“It’s.. from Jane.”
“Jane?” My eyes subconsciously drifted toward the door, half–expecting her to walk through. “You saw her? Where is she now?”
Mia’s eyes fell for a second, then she shook her head. “No. She left. But she asked me to give this to you.”
No. I had to speak to her directly. I immediately reached for my phone, hit the speed dial and held the phone to my ear.
It went straight to voicemail. Damn it. I left a message anyway.
“Jane…” I heard my mother scoff, but that wasn’t going to deter me. I cleared my throat and started again. “Jane, call me. Please. Just… call me back.”
I gestured at Mia, and just as she crossed the room to hand me the envelope, Mother sprang up from her seat and snatched it out of her hands.
“What are you doing?!”
