Chapter 66
I made my way to the home office I rarely used when I lived here. I turned on my computer and quickly got to work on my resume like Aaron asked. That was the last thing tying me to the Blackwood name.
Just as I pulled open the file, my phone buzzed across the desk. I didn’t need to look at the screen to know it was Aaron. The timing was too perfect.
I picked it up, practically beaming from the inside out. “Hey, you,” I said, twirling slightly in the desk chair.
“Hey.” Lucky howled at the sound of his voice. He had an amazing effect on my wolf. “Are you going to tell me where you are now?”
“Yep. I’m home.”
“Home? I don’t see you beside me, Jane.”
I giggled. “No. I mean, I kicked Xander and Mia out and moved back in.”
“Seriously?” His voice shot up an octave. “Wait… what? How?”
“Well… I was just about to check into a hotel and I just got a feeling. Drove back here before I could talk myself out of it and just….took over.”
He went completely silent for a moment. “Okay… I’m trying my best not to freak out. But I’m going to need a full play–by–play.”

I stood and paced as I talked. I ran through everything, describing every single detail.
“I threw all their shit in a laundry basket,” I told Aaron, biting back a smile. “His stupid black shirts, all of Mia’s clothes. I emptied out the entire closet. Piled it like garbage and dumped half of it on the ground.”
He sucked in a breath. “Jane. You didn’t.”
“I did. And I burned the rest. Lit up Xander’s precious grill and burned it all.”
Aaron gasped dramatically then burst into laughter. “You burned it? You actually burned it?”
I nodded. “Yep. I guess that grill did come in handy afterall.” I expected him to laugh again, but there was no sound coming from the other end. “Aaron? Still there?”
And then, he began hooting and clapping.
“God, you’re so precious and unhinged. And I am proud of you.”
I’m proud of you too, Lucky said. My heart swelled in my chest. It was an amazing feeling. “It felt… good. Like I’d been holding my breath for years and could finally let go.”
“Yeah. I can hear it in you. I’m glad.” I could hear his smile. I pictured him laying in bed, looking sexy as hell. Lucky jumped in excitement. She wanted to be near him as much as I did.
“You want to hear the best part?” I asked, grinning again.
Aaron chuckled. “There’s more?”

“Of course. You’re going to love this. I met them at the door, wearing pajamas, stun gun in hand, looking like a completely crazy person.”
He was laughing so hard now that he was choking on his own spit. “I bet you looked like a sleep–deprived wolf.”
“Oh, you have no idea. I didn’t even blink. Just stood in the doorway and flashed the stun gun. Mia was so scared, it was comical.”
“Holy shit.”
“Yeah. It didn’t take much to get both of them to leave. They knew how serious I was.”
Aaron whistled. “I guess you are the Alpha now.”
“Exactly. You should have seen how they just stood there, unable to decide how to react. I took his car keys, reminded Xander that the house is in my name and kicked him out.”
I heard Aaron shift on the other end, probably propping himself up on his shoulder. “That’s kind of insane. Either he’s really stupid, or…”
“Or?” I prompted.
“Or, he loves you in some deeply twisted, possessive way.”
I scoffed. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Xander just never thought I’d leave him. “If that’s love, I don’t want it.”
“You’re right. You’re definitely better off without him.”
“I know.” I settled back into the chair. I tucked my legs under me and leaned my head against the back of the chair. It felt amazing to talk to Aaron. I couldn’t wait to see him again.

“Hey, maybe someday you can meet my friends.”
I smirked, picturing it. There was so much I didn’t know about Aaron and his friends would be the perfect way in. “You’re like an onion.”
“What does that mean?”
“You have a lot of layers. Every time I make you happy, I peel one back.”
Aaron snorted. “Careful, Jane. Keep going and you might strip me entirely.”
