I pressed the call button once, then again. No answer. The gate remained stubbornly closed. With a frustrated sigh, I pressed my hand against the center of the steering wheel and honked. There was still no response. I honked again.
The gate finally groaned open, but not enough for the car to pass through. Instead, Grant, our doorman rushed out.
He tapped the window twice. “Good day. The system didn’t recognize your car. Would you mind rolling down your window?” I did as he said. His eyes widened when he saw me. “Luna Jane. I apologize for the delay. Please go right through.
We won’t be his mate soon, Lucky growled against my chest.
The gate finally parted fully. The driveway curved just like I
remembered. I didn’t even have to look to know where I was going. My legs moved automatically as I parked, retrieved my bag from the trunk and walked to the front door.
I pushed the door open and stepped in. I expected to see Xander standing there with a smug grin on his face, but the house was empty.
The living room looked the same. The space still smelled expensive, the wood was still impeccably polished, and the imported leather I’d selected still sat in the same positions. And the smell. Ugh… I definitely
didn’t miss that.
The sharp scent of Xander’s overused cologne hung in the air like a ghost.

I moved through the familiar hallway duffel bag in hand, past the stupid paintings Xander never appreciated and moved up the stairs. Lucky growled inside me as we moved closer to the master bedroom. It still held painful memories for the both of us. That was where Xander and I started this marriage, now cursed by the image of him and Mia rolling between my sheets.
I sucked in a breath, mentally preparing myself for what awaited me before pushing the door open.
It was empty, just like the rest of the house. My eyes landed on the king sized bed. It was the same one. I scoffed. Same white headboard, same cream sheets, same coffee brown blankets. Surely, Xander could afford new beddings.
Well, I didn’t mind. I was going to take it back.
I didn’t give myself time to think. I let my bag fall to the floor and grabbed the edge of the duvet and yanked it so hard the pillows flew off. I grabbed every sheet, every stupid piece of fabric Mia layed her devious little head on. I tore it all off and shoved it into the laundry basket like I was purging something rotten.
The smell of her vanilla fabric softener clung to everything. Of course she used vanilla. I always hated vanilla.
The closet was next. I flung it open without hesitation and was hit with the same scent. Mia had claimed my side, her revealing clothes flooding my shelves and hangers. Get rid of everything, Lucky spurred
me on.
I laughed. Mia really made herself at home. Well, that was no more.
Silky dresses, designer blouses still with the tags, vacation skirts, heels, everything… I pulled them all down. I dumped them into another

Three hampers and an empty closet later, I heard my phone buzzing in my bag. I didn’t have to check to know who it was. “Aaron,” I said, breathless from the exorcism I was about to perform.
“Well,” he began, sounding amused. “I take it my runaway girlfriend has changed her mind about leaving?”
I stared at the mess around me. “I found the perfect place to stay,” I told Aaron, still slightly out of breath. “And it’s free.” There was a pause on the other end. I could tell he was trying to guess where I was. “I’ll explain later,” I added quickly before he could ask. And then I hung up.
By the time I was done, the closet looked like a burglar had gone through it.
I dragged all six hampers out of the closet, into the room and hooked my finger into the laundry basket. I could barely carry it all. So, I proceeded to drag everything at once. I wasn’t about to make two trips.
I walked backwards, turning every so often to make sure I wasn’t about to hit anything. My feet felt light as I made my way down the stairs even with the overstuffed bags I was dragging.
