The next morning, I sat cross–legged with my laptop open, my resignation letter staring back at me. I was dressed in a simple black dress that stopped right above my knees. My dark hair was tied into a ponytail, and I had little to no makeup on.
I had something very important planned for the day.
I read the letter over and over again. It looked perfect, but did I really get every single detail? I still couldn’t decide if it was good to go.
“Going somewhere?”
I turned to find Aaron leaning against the doorframe of my room, fully dressed in tailored slacks and a crisp white shirt. He looked so
handsome. My fingers itched with the urge to undo the buttons of his shirt. Lucky seemed to agree as she howled in excitement.
“Yeah…” I trailed off.
He pulled out his car keys from his pocket and tossed them gently onto the bed.
“Why are you giving me your keys?”
“Because I can’t always be there to get you where you need to go.”

I leaned over and picked them up slowly. “Didn’t you say you don’t let anyone touch your car?”

Aaron crossed the room in two strides and bent down, lips brushing my forehead with so much tenderness.
He placed a finger under my chin and lifted my gaze to his. “You’re not anyone.”

“You’re not anyone.”
‘You mean a lot to him Jane‘, Lucky said to me. He’s going to take care of us. She was right.
So I shook the keys in front of him and laughed. “And what exactly are you going to drive if you’re handing me your beloved car?”
He shrugged. “I’ve got options. I just prefer the Aston Martin because it‘ s small and fast. Gets me where I want to be… quickly.”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes at the double innuendo. I gave him a mock salute instead. “Well, I promise not to wreck it.”
He stepped closer, his fingers brushing against my cheek as he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. “Just send me your location when you get there.”
I nodded, biting back the sudden lump in my throat.
“You’re not going to tell me where there is?”
I shook my head. If I told Aaron that, he would tie me to this bed and lock me in this room for the rest of my life.
He leaned down, resting his forehead against mine before he kissed it softly. And that’s when the sadness hit me.

Aaron turned to go, but halfway to the door, he stopped. Then he came back with determination in his steps, cupped my face in both hands and kissed me slow and deep.
I clutched his wrists, holding on to him for dear life.
When he pulled back, he smiled against my lips. “So you’ll remember me.”
“I’ll never forget you,” I responded.
His smile didn’t fade as he straightened. But when I looked into his eyes, there was something that didn’t match his casual expression. It hit me square in the chest.
Lucky whimpered. We don’t want to hurt him.
He reached down and straightened the lapels of his suit jacket. I’d watched him do it a hundred times. But today, there was a sense of finality to it.
The lump in my throat was back. There was this invisible load on my shoulders and chest, pushing me into the ground. It was impossible to shake off, and not for lack of trying.
I was only leaving his house, I thought. But it felt like we were silently saying goodbye.
Aaron turned around again, but stopped at the door frame instead. He leaned against it, one hand braced above his head, and for a second, I thought maybe he’d tell me to stay.
Still, I saw the hesitation in his eyes. It was rarely ever there.
He cleared his throat and said, “When you get a chance… send me your

I blinked. “My résumé?” He nodded. “You want me to work for you?”
“Judging from experience… that’s not a good idea.”
We stared at each other for a second, then burst into laughter. The tightness in my chest eased a little. I felt a hint of warmth bloom in my chest instead. I could breathe again.
“Call me as soon as you get there.”
“I will.”
Aaron’s gaze lingered on me for a moment, and then he left.
