I searched his face. There was nothing but sincerity there, and maybe a flicker of guilt. I was skeptical. I didn’t like the fact that he’d made a ‘deal‘ with Amelia – behind my back no less.
Trust him, Lucky urged. He’s telling the truth.
My trust for him wasn’t in doubt. It was Amelia I didn’t trust.
I looked into his warm blue eyes and felt myself visibly relax. “I appreciate that. But peace…” I paused, thinking of the best way to express myself. “It’s practically a luxury to me.” Aaron started to speak but I held up a hand. “Just listen.”
He nodded.
“I’ll never have peace. Not as long as those people are still tangled in my life. I’ll always be watching my back, checking the tabloids, waiting for the other shoe to drop. We don’t make deals with people like that.”
He squeezed my hand. “You’re right. I didn’t think of that. I’m sorry.”
Ugh. I couldn’t stay angry at him. Not when he was looking at me like that. I leaned in and pecked him on the lips. “It’s okay. I actually have something I should tell you.”
“Shoot.”
“Well… I didn’t think too much about it at first and I was going to mention it later on, but now it makes sense. Amelia called me.”

I paused, waiting for him to absorb the news. But his face barely moved, so I continued. “She called right before dinner. I hung up the moment I heard her voice.”
“I can’t fault you for doing that.”
I tried to smile at him, but I couldn’t bring myself to. Aaron was knee deep in something that had nothing to do with him. Yes, he said he didn’t terminate the contract because of me, but he went there with my best interest at heart. He even ended up negotiating a deal for ME. And even though I didn’t have the full details, I was certain it was to his detriment.
That’s just the type of man Aaron Lorenz is.
“I’d say George was right to be concerned earlier.”
He smirked and tilted his head. “What did he say?”
“He said I’d only end up dragging you into my mess.”
His smile faded instantly.
I loved having Aaron by my side, but it wasn’t fair to him. Guilt bloomed in my chest. “He was right. I shouldn’t have…”
“Hey.” Aaron reached out and lifted my chin with the back of his fingers. His touch was so tender that it made my heart ache. “I volunteered to be in this, Jane. I stepped in with both feet, eyes wide open.” He didn’t blink as he said the next words. “I did it because I know you’re worth it.”
“You’re worth it, Jane,” he continued, brushing my cheek with his thumb gently. “Every complicated little piece of you.”

I didn’t know what to say. So, I just let myself lean into him. “That’s a tough act to follow,” I murmured into his palm.
“I’m sure you can think of something.”
I rolled my eyes, and my gaze landed on his lips. “Really?”
“Of course. I trust your… capabilities fully.”
“Shut up.”
He grinned. “There’s only one way to shut me up.”
Then his lips met mine. Lucky was howling in excitement, mirroring the thumping in my chest. The tension that had been building all night, from the argument, the article… everything. I felt my anger fade away as his lips swept over mine.
It was tantalizing.
My fingers curled into his shirt, and I let myself forget everything but the heat of his mouth on mine.
We finally pulled apart, breathless, clinging to each other for dear life.
“I want to find a place where no one will bother us.” Then without warning, he gripped my waist, bent for a moment and slung me over his shoulder like I weighed nothing.
“Aaron!” I shrieked. I pounded my fists lightly against his back. “Put me down!” My protests were weak. I giggled into his back as he began to move down the hallway and up the stairs.
“Not until we’re alone.”

I let my head drop against his back, my hair falling like a curtain.
I was breathless from laughter, still pretending to protest as Aaron finally set me down in my room. I was dizzy, not just from his movements on his stairs, but also from anticipation.
“You’re insane,” I murmured, brushing a hand through my hair.
“Only for you.”
