Chapter 56
“You don’t know Amelia like I do. She’s playing you. It’s a double hit for her, getting the both of us at the same time. She doesn’t want peace. She’s going to pretend she does and go right ahead and drag my name through the mud. And she’ll do it in front of the media.”
He shook his head again. “I think you’re wrong. Amelia really had no choice but to agree with my terms.
“No… you don’t understand.
“She’s not behind the article, Jane. She offered a deal, why would she ruin everything with this mediocre blog post?”
“Because that’s exactly what Amelia does,” I shot back. “You shouldn’t be fooled by her smile.”
Aaron’s jaw clenched. “You’re letting your history with her cloud your judgment.”
“Could my…” There was no way he just said that. “You’re defending her, really?”

“I’m not defending her. I’m just saying it could as well be someone else. Someone who benefits from the drama. They might not even be directly involved in it all, they just thrive in chaos. You shouldn’t jump into conclusions yet.
I folded my arms tightly across my chest. Lucky growled and whimpered all at once. He should take our side, what is he doing? She cried. I wondered the same thing myself.

“You think I’m being unreasonable,” I said, matter of factly.
He didn’t answer. That was all the confirmation I needed.
My stomach twisted. I couldn’t believe this beautiful night had been ruined, by Amelia no less. I knew I was right. Why couldn’t he just sec that?
“You know what?” I began. “I’ve already been called a slut by strangers online. So pardon me if I’m not being your definition of reasonable right now.”
Aaron said nothing after that. We stared at each other, chest rising and falling as if we were at a stnd–off.
Before either of us could say anything, the silence was filled by the sound of footsteps. Liz, George’s caretaker, stood in the doorway. She wore scrubs as usual, her short brown hair pulled into a ponytail.
“Evening, sorry to intrude.” she said gently.
George’s face brightened as he turned to face her. “Liz… I’ve been waiting for you.”
She smiled politely. “Well, it’s a good thing I’m here now.”
“Don’t you have a special greeting for your favorite patient?”
Liz rolled her eyes, already familiar with his antics. “You say that to all your caretakers.”
“Ah, but none of them wear blue like you do. The color was made for you.”
Liz chuckled and grabbed the handles of his wheelchair. I visibly

relaxed. George had managed to ease the tension. But I knew the moment he left, Aaron and I would pick up where we left off.
“Come on, Romeo. Time to get some rest.”

As Liz started to wheel him out, George twisted his neck and looked back at us. “Try not to burn down the house while I’m gone.”
I couldn’t promise not to.
*Jane*
I almost started to wish George hadn’t left. With him there, it didn’t actually feel like we were arguing. But now that he was gone, a tense silence filled the dining room.
Lucky seemed confused. At one point she howled in support of Aaron, and another, she growled in anger. I could understand how she felt.
Aaron suddenly closed that distance. I raised my eyebrow as he moved his chair closer. He reached for my hand and wrapped his fingers around them.
“I only wish the best for you,” he said quietly, brushing the back of my hand with his thumb.
His touch calmed not only me but Lucky too. Calm down, Jane, Lucky said, once again changing her stance. I wanted to fight it, but I was defenseless against him.
“If you really want me to be okay… then don’t make decisions for me.” I met his blue eyes. “I don’t need protection. I need you on my side. With me.”
He exhaled loudly. “I’ve been on your side all along.” He took another
