Chapter 55
But when George didn’t answer and just kept yelling out Spanish words, Aaron pulled out his cell phone. His gaze fell immediately.
“What? What is it?” Both of them just stared at their devices. Wouldn’t anyone tell me what was going on?
Aaron finally cleared his throat. “It’s an article.”
“About?”
“Uhm… Myself, Xander, and…”
“And?” I prompted.
“And you.”

I sat there, barely breathing. I curled my fingers around the edge of the chair as I stared daggers at Aaron. I’d spent the last couple of minutes trying to get him to tell me what this article was about, what they were saying about us.
But Aaron just avoided my gaze. From the way he was acting, I knew it wasn’t good. He’s trying to protect you, Lucky said. Not when I already know it’s nothing good. He needs to tell me, I responded.
Aaron’s phone sat on the table, face down now. I regretted leaving my phone upstairs. Then I wouldn’t have had to rely on them for information.

He still wouldn’t meet my eyes. He was staring down at his half empty plate as if it was the most interesting thing in the world.
“Aaron…” I began, but he was already turning away from me. I noticed the twitch in his jaw, the way he shifted in his seat, squirming slightly. George too had gone completely quiet, which was very unlike him.
Then Aaron’s gaze shifted to mine for a second. I knew that look. He was worried that things were ruined. He just wants to have a perfect night with you, Lucky offered. I ignored her.
I leaned toward him. “Tell me what the article says.”
He hesitated again. I was beginning to think I’d have to make the trip upstairs after all. But then he sighed and reached for his wine glass. “It‘ s just people stirring the pot,” he said, deflecting. “It;s not worth your energy.”
That clearly wasn’t an answer.
“Just tell me, Aaron. How bad can it be?“.

His eyes finally met mine. “Jane, can we just finish eating first? Please. Let’s not let some desperate blogger ruin this night.”
“For God’s sake, Aaron,” George suddenly spoke. “Don’t dance around it. Tell her what’s going on.”
Aaron flinched. He looked at George like he wanted to argue, but then his eyes drifted back to me and then his shoulders fell.
“Fine. But just don’t believe everything you hear… alright?” he said, fixing me with a pointed look.
I nodded. “I won’t.”

Then he reached for his phone, and scrolled for a short moment. He cleared his throat, eyes scanning the screen. “It’s a gossip blog. Nothing reputable…” he paused, then sighed again. The suspense was practically killing me.
“It says ‘there’s a war brewing between two Alphas… Xander Blackwood and Aaron Lorenz, all because of Jane Blackwood.”
I blinked. “A war?”
“I told you to take this with a grain of salt. There’s more.” he turned his attention back to his screen. “Jane appears to be at the center of a long- standing rivalry between the two Alphas. A rivalry which has since heated up the moment Jane packed her things from her husband’s house and moved in with Aaron Lorenz.”
I felt my jaw tightened. “Is that all?”
“Just some unnecessary stuff. It’s not important.” He dropped his phone back on the table.
I knew he wouldn’t tell me all of it, so I dropped it. I’ll just have to see for myself later. I didn’t even have to think twice before blurting out, “Amelia. She did this.”
To my surprise, Aaron shook his head. “No. I don’t think it was her.”
“What do you mean? She’s the only one who hates me badly enough to do this.”
He exhaled slowly, running a frustrated hand through his hair. “Amelia offered me a deal when I went to terminate the contract.”
The way he said it made my entire body go still.

“She said if you dropped the lawsuit, they’d agree to drop all charges and… give you seventy percent of Xander’s assets.”
My mouth flew open. I turned to look at George to see if he was just as baffled as I was. From the way his hands hung loosely at his sides, I knew he was.
I fixed my angry gaze on Aaron. “What? You have to be joking. Tell me you didn’t accept it.” Aaron didn’t reply. Damn it. “You shouldn’t have even considered it.”
