Chapter 53
Lucky howled at that. George has a point. We should have pups with Aaron. I shook her away. I couldn’t think about that.
Aaron glanced over his shoulder, raised his eyebrow, but didn’t say anything. He just kept stirring the pot, without acknowledging the fact that George had just casually suggested we start producing a small
army.
“Speaking of families,” Aaron said as he reached for the salt shaker. “I was thinking I’d take you to London next month. Meet the Lorenz folk.”
I stared at him. That’s definitely what I expected him to say. At all. “You… what?”
Aaron didn’t offer any explanation. He gave his full attention to the stove, adding spices and stirring skillfully.
I sat there, watching Aaron as he moved. It was impossible not to. It was truly mesmerizing, the way his shirt clung to his back, damp from the heat of the kitchen. The fabric was so thin that I could see his muscles shifting beneath the cotton. It was maddening.
I didn’t realize how long I’d been staring until I whipped my head around and locked eyes with George. He was smirking.
“I… uh… I’m going to take a shower,” I blurted out, springing out of my
seat like it was hot.
George lifted his glass in mock salute. “Sure you are. Enjoy your

I practically sprinted at the steam, cheeks on fire. I didn’t look at Aaron again, but I knew George’s eyes were following me.
Ugh… how obvious can I really be?
The dirty thoughts followed me right into the shower. The water was hot against my skin, but not as hot as Aaron had made me feel. Lucky was getting excited, but I shook my head. I tried to focus on the shower, but it was difficult.
I was still thinking about him as I dried myself up. It took me over five minutes to put on my simple green dress, because I was so distracted by Aaron that I kept trying to shove my head into the arm hole.
I finally managed to get dressed without any further incidents. My phone buzzed as I was pulling my hair into a loose knot. I grabbed it without checking. It was probably Aaron, calling me down for dinner.
“Hey,” I said, breathless. “I was just…”
“Jane.”
A female voice floated through the other end. Amelia. Her voice was like ice, and it quickly drove the warmth out of the room.
“We need to talk.”
*Jane*
Lucky growled at the sound of her voice. End the call now. She doesn’t have anything good to tell us.

and the line dropped dead. I pulled the phone from my car and stared at the screen.
Amelia Powell: Call ended.
Her name remained there like a sinister crack on the screen. I feared she might call again. Amelia didn’t like being ignored very much. I quickly switched my phone to Do Not Disturb and hid the device under

my phone. I wouldn’t put it past Amelia to jump out of the
claw my eyes out.
If my interaction with Aaron earlier in the kitchen told me anything, it was that tonight was going to be great. I wasn’t about to let the devil’s spawn ruin it.
I turned to the mirror and studied my reflection. My cheeks were still flushed from the shower. My lips were rose–colored, courtesy of my lipstick, and the neckline of my dress dipped a little, revealing the tiniest bit of cleavage.
My head buzzed in excitement. Aaron had spent practically the entire evening cooking. And now, I get to enjoy a delicious meal and a tall, dark, handsome feast.
Most of the pain in my limbs had subsided. I could barely feel anything as I walked downstairs. Lucky was probably getting stronger, she was healing quickly.

The air was filled with the scent of garlic and rosemary. My stomach growled again. Lord… I couldn’t wait to fill my plate with whatever Aaron had prepared.
I turned the corner and found him and George, already waiting at the table.

Aaron looked up first, and the moment our eyes met, his entire face lit up. “Hi,” he mouthed to me.
“Hey,” I said back.
George sat on his wheelchair, which was as close to the table as he could possibly get. When he noticed me, he threw his hands up in the air.
