Chapter 50
“This is a trap,” David said.
I nodded. I knew Amelia was trying to set me up. I knew it from the moment she opened her mouth.
*Aaron*
“She’s trying to control you. She’s trying to keep you captive to her terms.” He glanced around before he continued. “She’s offering you sixty percent just to get you back. And if you bite, she’ll have you locked for five years and God knows how long.”
He was right. He was always right.
“They want you to stay for their benefit, not yours.”
I leaned back against the wall and considered his words. Amelia wreaked of schemes and plots. She definitely wasn’t as subtle as she liked to believed. But a resolution had to be made at some point.
“I want both,” I said quietly.
David turned to me. “Both what?”
“I know you don’t trust Amelia. You’re right not to. Hell, neither do I. But this is much bigger than her, bigger than the entire contract.”
He blinked at me. “Aaron, what are you talking about?”
I didn’t answer right away. I looked down the hallway just in time to

catch Xander walking back to his office. Fen stirred at the sight of him. Coward, he growled. His wolf is weak, Aaron. We can end this once and for all.
I shook my head and turned my attention to David. “Have you ever been in love?” I asked.
David’s expression shifted immediately, eyebrows raised, mouth opened. “What?”
“You heard me.”
David stared at me again, baffled. “I’d had two marriages.”
“Exactly,” I said, and didn’t clarify.
David seemed even more confused. He rubbed his temple like I’d given him a migraine. “You’re not making a lick of sense.”
I exhaled slowly. “I’ve been in love.” I paused for a beat. I loved Yve with everything I had. But there was another love for me, one I hadn’t fully acknowledged yet. “It’s changed the way I look at things.”
Dabid just stared at me like I’d gone batshit crazy. I mean, I’ve felt a little crazy these past few days. Crazy in love.
“Name one thing you care about,” I asked him.
“My kids.”
“Okay. then you’ll get this easily.” I turned to face him fully now. “Picture your kid standing in the middle of a road. It’s moving too fast, and there’s nothing you can’t do to stop it. You’ve got one second to act.”

He folded his arms, waiting for me to get to the point.
“You’re a bear shifter,” I said. “You’ve got the strength. You can throw yourself in front of the car, take the hit, and absorb the full impact. It’s going to hurt like hell. Maybe you’ll break some bones. But you’re a shifter, you’ll survive. And you do it without hesitation. Because letting that car hit your kid isn’t an option.”
David sighed and ran a hand down his face. “So, let me get this straight. Jane is the kid in this analogy. You’re the hero who comes to save her, and Amelia’s the car. Okay. But so what, Aaron?”
“So, trust me.”
I could see the worry lines in his head as he frowned. “I’m your attorney. You should trust me. It doesn’t work this way.”
“I know… but let me handle this for now.”
He groaned in frustration but nodded. “I hope this doesn’t backfire.” He sighed again, then readjusted his jacket. “Let’s go back.”
I followed after him, the plan already forming in my head. We’ll do anything it takes to protect Jane, Fen said. Yes, we will.
Amelia was already sitting when we returned. Xander was still fuming behind his desk even as Rowan whispered things to him. My gaze flickered to Mia. She was perched a few feet away from Xander’s desk.
Amelia’s eyes were on me like a predator tracking their prey. She was in for a rude awakening.
David sat down, but I didn’t. I placed my hands on the table and looked every one of them in the eye. “I didn’t start my company just to make

money. I started it because I wanted to create something to give back to the world.”
I glanced at Amelia who didn’t even try to look interested. Well, I would get her attention soon enough.
“And it’s because of that, that I can’t accept your deal, Mrs. Blackwood.” Her eyes snapped up immediately with barely disguised rage. She opened her mouth to speak, but I quickly cut in. “I have a new offer.” I grabbed a paper and a pen from the table and scribbled my terms on it before sliding it across.
