Chapter 39
I blinked at him. “Why?”
“Because I’ve seen the way he looks at you. He’s brighter lately. If it gets too deep and you leave, I’m not sure he’ll come back from it this time.”
I nodded slowly. He had a point. “I came here to bury my former self. I‘ m no longer Mrs. Blackwood or Luna Jane. I’m just Jane… Jane Ashford.”
George raised an eyebrow. “Ah! The divorce.” He sucked his teeth. “Wasn’t like that in my day. Help me understand, will you?”
I tried to dodge the topic with a small smile. “Oh, it’s a typical sob story. Nothing interesting. I…”
But when I looked at him again, saw the way his brows furrowed in concern. I couldn’t speak. I saw empathy, sadness. And for some reason, it hurt more than anything else.
I couldn’t possibly explain why, but I had this intense urge to bare my soul to him. It’d been a while since I felt that way. Well, except when I was with Aaron.
I didn’t want to lie to George or dismiss his questions.
So I took a deep breath and said, “I’m getting a divorce from Xander Blackwood.”
He shook his head. “You don’t have to tell me why. But if I had to

guess, infidelity? Emotional abuse?”
I nodded. He was spot on.
“The Blackwood Pack is extremely powerful. You really want to go against Xander and his entire bloodline?”
I knew he was concerned for me. But I’d started this already, I was going to finish it. With the strength of my wolf and the moon goddess.
“This isn’t going to be a clean fight, sweetheart,” George continued. “This battle doesn’t involve just you. It involves everyone close to you.”
I turned to face him fully. “I said I’m ready. I’m not afraid to fight.”
“Are you?” he asked. “Because when they pin everything on you, and they will, it won’t just be your burden to bear. It’ll fall on him too. His business, his reputation… his pack.”
My stomach twisted. “But what does all this have to do with Aaron?”
“It’s because…”
The doorbell rang.
Polin looked up from the stove. “I’ll get it.” She wiped her hands on her apron and disappeared.
We waited in silence and I decided to turn my attention to the window. She returned a moment later, and locked her gaze on me.
“The security guard at the gate says someone’s here… looking for Jane Blackwood.”

You could have heard a pin drop. I sat there, staring at the two full plates of untouched chilaquiles. I could feel Polin and George’s gazes on me, waiting for a response.
“Uhm… did they say who it was?”
Polin frowned and shook her head. “Just said it’s someone from the Supreme Court. A process server.
“Here? What for?”

She gave a half shrug. “That’s what I thought, chica. But the address led ‘em straight here. They got some papers for you. Normally security would’ve just dropped it off, but…” she trailed off, making a face. “Turns out, they had no ‘Jane Blackwood‘ on file, so they figured they better double–check before handing over something official.”
I looked up and found Polin staring at me. From the way her brow was raised, I already knew what she was about to say.
“We could say you’re not home,” she said casually, “Could say you’re… I dunno, a ghost. Whatever works, chica.”
It was tempting. I mean, it would be easy to deny my existence entirely. Even security didn’t know who I was.
“Process servers don’t come with cupcakes, you know. Only bad news shows up with paperwork.”
Despite every part of me screaming to take Polin’s advice, stay inside and just let this person walk away, I forced myself to move.
“I’ll be right back,” I said to both of them.
I wiped my sweaty palms on my leggings as I made my way out of the

kitchen, walked through the hallway and out of the house. I chewed the inside of my cheek when I spotted a man probably in his late forties with a tan line from sunglasses and a slouched posture standing right outside the high iron gates.
He turned his attention from the security guard speaking to me. “Mrs. Jane Blackwood?”
I nodded.
He pulled the envelope from the crook of his arm and slipped it through the gate with two fingers. “You’ve been served.” As soon as I grabbed it. he turned around and walked off.
