Chapter 37
“Yup. Two days after I got him settled there. I found him halfway down the highway rolling his chair like he was in a damn marathon. Looked me dead in the eye and told me that if I tried to stick him in a place full of drooling old betas, he’d bite his own tail off.”
I laughed harder, and Aaron joined in. “That definitely sounds like him.” I could see it clearly, George yelling at Aaron with that stubborn set on his mouth. But we both knew it was because he felt most at home with Aaron. He didn’t want to be separated from family.
I leaned back onto Aaron and closed my eyes. I took in his scent, relished in the way his hands felt on my back. When I opened my eyes, Aaron was staring at me. It was the same look he had on right before he kissed me.
And by the goddess, my wolf was hungry for him.
“I’ve been feeling a lot of sparks lately,” he said instead.
I cleared my throat. “Sparks?”
“Yeah.” He tightened his hand around mine and kissed my fingers again. “I haven’t felt like this in a long time. Not since… well, before. And it’s not just me. My wolf… he wants you.”
You could cut the tension with a knife. Aaron was looking at me like he wanted to swallow me whole. And Lucky, she was elated. She paced, growled, whimpered, roared. She wanted him too. Every part of her howled for him.

But I didn’t say it out loud.
I forced myself to pull back. My wolf didn’t like it. Lucky clawed at my insides. But I managed to keep my voice calm as I spoke.
“Aaron… I don’t know much about you… or anything at all.” He drew his brows together as if to say ‘that’s not entirely true.” “Well, I know that you like to make jokes. I know you’re kind and thoughtful. But I don’t know anything about your past. Not even… her.”
His jaw tensed before I even said the word. But I said it anyway. “Your ex–wife.”
Aaron’s entire demeanor shifted instantly. His eyes darkened, body stiffened. He pulled away from me and rose to his feet. “I have some work I need to attend to.”
“Aaron…”
He leaned down and kissed me on the forehead. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“Aaron… Please stay, we can talk about something else.”
Aaron didn’t turn back. He strolled out of the room.
Lucky whined in my chest. I exhaled and stared at the door, wondering what I had to do to get him to open up to me. Aaron knew practically everything about me. It just wasn’t ideal.
After about an hour, I pulled myself from bed. I took a long, hot shower, trying to wash away all the confusion. I quickly dressed up in a hoodie and leggings, grabbed my laptop and headed downstairs hoping to see Aaron.
Most of the pain in my limbs had subsided, but I still strained a little as

I moved.
As I rounded the bottom step, I heard George’s voice coming from the kitchen and an unfamiliar woman’s voice laced with a Mexican accent.
Curious, I followed the sound.
There was a petite woman with dark curly hair and kind eyes standing by the counter. She wore a floral apron tied at the waist over a brown linen dress. Amidst the smell of spices and tomatoes in the kitchen, her own scent was unmistakable.
This woman wasn’t a wolf. She was a Fox shifter.
It was rare to find them here in the city, but I wasn’t surprised. The Lorenz pack has proved to be kind and more accepting of other shifters.
I looked at her again. She looked beautiful even as she moved around the kitchen, stirring, whipping, frying.
Her brown eyes widened when she noticed me standing there. “Oh, you startled me.”
George smirked. “Well, isn’t that a miracle? You can finally walk.”
“All thanks to your grandson’s magic hands. You should book an appointment.”
“Ha! Not a chance.” He gestured toward me with his mug. “This is Jane, Aaron’s girlfriend.”
*Jane*
I didn’t bother correcting him. George would believe what he wanted to. I simply smiled at the woman and let her draw her own conclusions

She gave me a radiant smile that made her entire face glow with genuine warmth. Then she glanced at George with one perfectly raised eyebrow. “Oh my goodness, when did that happen? Last I knew, poor Aaron was single, no?”
