Chapter 152
But when I met his eyes, hoping against all hope to see joy, or at least some form of it, Aaron was staring out the window. He wasn’t even looking at me… his wife. His face was contorted in anger, just like it had been since we stepped out of the church.
I didn’t know what to do to bring him back. “Aaron?” I whispered, but he didn’t respond.
I swallowed and concentrated on the task at hand. We completed the slice and lifted the blue piece away from the cake, revealing it to the guests.
A loud cheer and applause filled the room, but everything felt so dull. My heart wasn’t in it. There was a tight feeling in my chest, something I hadn’t felt in so long. And the worst part? I didn’t know why Aaron wouldn’t tell me what was going on. I couldn’t help him if I didn’t know what was wrong.
“It’s a boy!” someone shouted from the crowd, and I heard Jenniffer’s delighted gasp.
I felt hot tears pricking the corners of my eyes. I wanted my husband to be here with me. But Aaron was a thousand miles away. In a room full of people and I’d never felt more alone.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the lead singer announced. “The Lorenz’s are having a boy!”
The band began playing a celebratory song, and soon everyone was dancing and laughing.
I just stood there, holding a piece of blue cake, desperately fighting tears back. His hand was no longer on mine. He;d barely spared me a glance since we left the church, barely said more than five words to me.
I doubled my efforts in holding back my tears when Aaron’s family rushed forward. The last thing I wanted was to burst into tears in front of them.
Soon enough, we were surrounded by them. Before I could even process what was happening, I was swept into a group hug by Aaron’s sisters. Diana’s arm wrapped around me from one side, Bonnie from the other, and Cathe was practically about to tackle me to the floor.
“A nephew!” Cathe clapped her hands excitedly. “Oh, Jane. He’s going to be so loved. I can’t wait to spoil him rotten. We’ll have to go shopping for the nursery soon. Oh, I have the greatest idea…”
“Cathe!” Bonnie and Diana called in unison.
I tried to smile at the familial interaction, but my eyes kept searching for Aaron within the crowd that surrounded us. During the congratulations, I’d lost him. My eyes darted to every single corner of the room, every face, every suit. But I didn’t spot his charcoal gray suit

with the little rip by the side. Neither did I find his blue eyes staring back at me.
Chapter 152
Where did he go? Lucky whined. He should be here.
As if pulled by a magnetic force, I glanced at the exit door at the far right of the ballroom. I hadn’t scanned the area because I didn’t think he’d actually leave, but when I finally spotted him, my heart dropped to the floor.
He was walking away. He was actually leaving the ballroom. He was striding toward one of the exits that led directly to the hotel’s exterior courtyard.
No. Lucky howled in pain. He can’t leave us.
But that’s exactly what he was doing. I wanted to scream, to get his attention so he would come right back to me. I just couldn’t find my
voice.
I just stood there, rooted to the spot as I watched the father of my pup walk away from such an important moment.
Maybe he just needs some time alone, I thought. This must be bringing back memories of his late son, Ethan. Yes. That must be it. I should have thought about this before.
You’re making excuses for him, Lucky said.
