“Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time as husband and wife, Mr and Mrs, Aaron Lorenz!”
I fixed a fake smile on my face as Aaron and I stepped into the room arm in arm amidst the warm applause from all our guests.
The ballroom was everything I’d dreamed of. Decorated with the white roses I’d chosen, ivory silk, a crystal chandelier at the center that illuminated the whole room. I’d chosen this place because it was at the heart of the city, in a hotel room with a beautiful honeymoon suite.
It should have felt like a fairytale. But despite the people surrounding us, despite Aaron’s arm linked with mine, he might as well have been standing on the other side of the world.
Aaron couldn’t even manage a fake smile for the benefit of our guests or even me… his wife. I could feel the tension radiating from him, and when I glanced up, I saw his jaw twitching. His wolf was still terribly agitated.
I was terribly confused. I knew this dangerous mood was because of that strange man who had appeared at the church. But I didn’t know why the man had gotten under his skin so badly.

Was that really his brother? I mean there were some similarities, mostly in height and the general structure of his face. But that was about it. The man had none of the warm energy that usually surrounded Aaron. Usually, because that energy was nowhere to be found right now.
In all the months we spent together, Aaron had never mentioned having a brother. All the siblings I knew of were Cathe, Bonnie and Diana who were wearing similar facial expressions as Aaron right now. It made me question everything.
How many more secrets was my new husband keeping from me?
I was pulled away from my thoughts when the lead singer of the band announced our first dance. Aaron led me to the dance floor at the center of the ballroom just as the first notes of our chosen song filled the air.
He turned to me with what I was sure was supposed to be a smile, but his lips barely curved upward. His hand found the small of my back, and we swayed slowly to the tune.
I was disappointed. I’d thought this moment would be magical. But all I felt was an insane amount of anxiety and apprehension.
“You’re trembling,” I whispered as we swayed to the music.
“Just the excitement of the day.”

As we turned in slow circles, I searched for his family. They stood clustered together near the far wall, and not one of them was smiling. His mother gripped her pearls tightly, Bob stood beside her, hands curled into fists. And his sisters, they looked just as grim.
The man had done a number on the entire Lorenz family in less than five minutes. But why? Why did he have so much power over all of them?
Bob seemed to be the most agitated of all of them. His eyes kept darting around the room, as if he expected the man to jump out and cause a scene. Aaron’s dad seemed to be bracing himself for impending doom.
Our first dance came to a merciful end, but Aaron and I remained on the dance floor, standing awkwardly beside each other.
I watched as the bandleader stepped forward enthusiastically. “Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom have a special surprise for us.”
The crowd’s attention shifted to the doors which had been pushed open. The hotel’s head baker, and her team, wheeled in our wedding cake.
All the anxiety disappeared as I looked at the elegant three–tiered white masterpiece. They followed my instructions and were decorated with blue and pink flowers. I could even smell the fondant from here. I was so excited for the reveal.

“Pay special attention to the color of the cake when they cut into it. The Lorenz’s are about to share some very exciting news!”
The entire room went completely silent. Hundreds of eyes turned to us. It seemed like they were all holding their breath in anticipation. I noticed a few of the guests glancing at each other, whispering amongst themselves. They were probably wondering what this was all about.
Even though I already knew the gender, I was practically vibrating with excitement for all of our loved ones to finally share in our joy. This was supposed to be one of those perfect moments, and yet, Aaron couldn’t be more distant.
The lights dimmed as we approached the cake table, and a spotlight appeared over us. I placed my hand on the silver knife handle, and Aaron soon placed his over mine. Even in this moment that should have been about our pup, I could still smell the rage coming off him in
waves.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded tightly, but his jaw was clenched so hard I worried it might snap. “Let’s just… let’s get this over with.”
I sighed and allowed our hands to descend. Together, we pressed the knife into the cake, slicing through the fondant. Right before we made the final slice, I looked up at him again with a ridiculously wide grin. My heart was filled with so much love for him and the tiny life growing inside of me.
