Chapter 148
Jane’s breath hitched. I could tell she too was holding back tears.
“I promise to love you for everything you are. For your terrible dancing skills and your beautiful laugh, for the way you take care of me and make my home look so complete. I promise to choose you every single day, in good times and bad, when you’re happy and when you’re
driving me absolutely crazy.”
The crowd laughed again.
“And I promise to always annoy you with my snide jokes, because someone has to keep you humble, and I’ve decided it might as well be me.”
Jane laughed and brushed a stray tear off her cheek. “You’re impossible.”
“And you love me anyway.”

She laughed again. “Yeah. I do. It’s crazy because when we first met, I thought you were just another arrogant guy trying to impress me. What I didn’t realize was that you could see the real me.
“You showed me what real kindness looks like. You opened my eyes to what love should feel like. Your loyalty is absolute. I’ve watched you drop everything just to ensure I’m okay. You would move heaven and earth to protect the people you love.”
Oh God… I was going to cry again.

“So, I promise to love you even when you leave your socks on the floor.” I raised my hands in mock surrender and the crowd chuckled. “Even when you host impromptu concerts and rob me of my sleep. I promise to support your dreams, whatever they might be. I promise to be your safe space, your biggest cheerleader, and I promise to show you every single day how much you mean to me.”
The tears I’d been fighting back finally spilled over. I couldn’t hold it anymore, not when she was looking at me like I was her entire world.
The entire chapel had gone quiet except from the sound of sniffling I was certain was from my family. Even Kol now looked suspiciously misty–eyed.
Pastor Matthew cleared his throat. “The rings?”
Kol stepped forward the same time Maria did. “Don’t drop it,” he murmured as he placed the ring in my palm.
My hands were shaking as I took Jane’s left hand in mine. “With this ring, I thee wed.” I slid the band onto her finger, loving the way it complemented her beautiful engagement ring.
Jane sniffled before she took my ring from Maria and slipped it onto my finger. “With this ring, I thee wed.”
Pastor Matthew smiled warmly at us both. “By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife.” He paused and looked directly at me. “You may kiss your bride.”
I didn’t need to be told twice.
My hands found Jane’s face. I cupped her cheeks and drew her toward me. The moment our lips met, the world around us simpley…

disappeared.
I barely heard the applause that ensued. All that existed was Jane and the delicious taste of her lips.
“Hi Husband,” Jane whispered when we broke apart.
“Hi wife.”
With another blinding smile, we turned around to face our guests. Hand in hand, we walked down the aisle and out of the church. Rose petals and white confetti rained down from above. Even the sunlight seemed like it was out just for us.
“Congratulations you crazy kids.” Kol appeared beside us holding a small basket. In the blink of an eye, he tossed more flower petals in our faces.
“Kol,” Jane laughed, shielding her face. “Now, you owe me a dance. You have some serious making up to do.”
“Deal.”
We continued down the church steps, accepting congratulations and well–wishes from the crowd. The photographer was snapping pictures left and right, and everything was perfect, absolutely perfect.
And then, my eyes swept across the crowd and I froze.
Standing at the edge of the churchyard, partially hidden behind an oak tree, was a figure I’d hoped never to see again.
Why… Why was he here?
