Chapter 143
I clutched my stomach as the laughter intensified. Maria was truly the right amount of dramatic. When I finally calmed down, I said, “You’re right. It’s a bit much. He should do all that for his girlfriend instead.”
“Exactly! I mean, our relationship is mostly physical anyway. The emotional connection is really lacking.”
I forcefully swallowed the last of my sandwich before I would choke on
- it. “Right.” I murmured. My love life was the complete opposite of Maria’s and for some reason, I started feeling guilty.
“But enough about my disaster of a love life. What about you? It’s been three months since your divorce was finalized? Are you seeing anyone?”
I took a deep breath, not sure how she’ll react to the news. “Actually, I‘ m engaged.”
Maria’s fork fell limply from her fingers. “Engaged? Jane, when were you planning to mention this?”
I smiled and dropped the next bomb. “And pregnant. The wedding is in three weeks.”
“I didn’t even know you were in a relationship, and now you’re engaged and pregnant?”
The question was fair, and I had no good answer. So, I just shrugged my shoulders. “What can I say? It just happened.”

Maria suddenly squealed and reached over to squeeze my hands. “Oh my god! I’m so happy for you.” Then she frowned and said, “There’s a rumor going around that Ominent is looking to but Blackwood Group.”
The subject change was so abrupt it gave me whiplash. “What?”
“You know, I get why you divorced that man. All those allegations? I just feel bad for Mia. sometimes the other woman is a victim too.”
I felt Lucky growl within me. There’s no way she’s taking Mia’s side. But I didn’t get the chance to respond to Lucky, because Maria was still speaking.
“I saw the article the other day. Mia is so brave, such an inspiration to women…”
“And you believe her?”
“Why shouldn’t I? She seemed genuine, and Xander’s reputation with women isn’t the best.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. “Mia lied,” I blurted.
Maria blinked, clearly taken aback. “What do you mean she lied?”
“About everything. The pregnancy, the circumstance surrounsing their relationship. She fabricated the whole thing to gain sympathy and, more importantly, to position herself for a significant financial settlement.”
“How do you know this?”
“Because I caught her cheating on Xander. And I recorded her confessing to the fake pregnancy, among other things. I used that to help with my divorce. Mia was naturally cooperative with the smoking

bomb I had.”
Maria’s eyes widened. “You have evidence? Jesus Christ, Jane. You’re sitting on the story of the year. Why are you allowing Mia to give a stellar public performance? You can’t stay quiet.”
Wihtout waiting for my response, Maria pulled out her phone. “I’m texting my cousin Sofia. She writes for The Insider and she’s been dying for a story like this. If you send me the evidence, she can have it published within days.”
Part of me screamed thta this was a mistake. I’d sworn off any form of social media attention since those blogs tried to rip me apart during the divprce proceedings. But, should I sit with my hands folded in my life while Mia rewrote history? Wouldn’t I be just as bad if I let it happen?
Just do it, Lucky said. It’s the right thing to do.
“Fine. I’ll send it to you. But I need to edit some of it first,” I said, finally.
Maria smiled widely. “Of course.”
I wasn’t sure if I felt relief or dread. But maybe this was the true definition if peace. Maybe to truly end the chaos that ensued since the divorce, I needed to start one of my own.

Xander tugged at his tie as he walked into his courthouse with his mother by his side. She’d made it a habit of waking him up by dumping a bucket of ice–cold water on his head. However, that didn’t stop them from arriving at precisely fifteen minutes before the scheduled hearing.
He felt like a child again, not the powerful Alpha he knew himself to

- be. How low he had fallen.
“I still don’t understand why you couldn’t have kept things professional with Mia,” Amelia said as she adjusted her designer bag. “Really, Xander. You just had to have an affair with your Beta. That’s the only reason we’re in this mess.”
Xander’s jaw tightened. He’d had to listen to this same speech ever since Mia filed the godforsaken lawsuit against him.
