Chapter 140
“Clever little leech,” Amelia murmured. She never liked the girl from the moment she set her eyes on her. At the time, she had no idea why. But now, she knew exactly what it was. Sh

Xander finally pulled himself from his bed. His mother was right, and that was one of the reasons why he’d fought her. But he was still an Alpha, even though he didn’t feel like it most days.

He moved to the bathroom, allowing the hot water to wash away all the sweat, and the thick stench of alcohol that clung to him. As he dressed in simple slack and a sweater, he realized he was feeling a bit more like himself.
And so, he left his room and made his way to his mother’s. He needed to check on her progress and see if there indeed was anything they could find on Mia.
But on his way, he passed his mother’s study, and something caught his eye. He retraced his footsteps and pushed the door open. There was a manila folder sitting carelessly open on her desk. Xander picked it up and almost had a heart attack when he read its contents.

Xander snatched the folder from the desk and made his way to her room. Amelia was sorting through files by the window when Xander appeared.
“What is this?”
Amelia strained her eyes for a second, but once she recognized the document, she rolled her eyes. “Again with the dramatics. It’s exactly what it looks like.”
“When were you planning to tell me you’d sold the company to Ominent?”
Amelia sighed and pressed a frustrated finger against her temple. “Your scandal is dragging the company down faster than we can contain it. Firing you wasn’t enough.”
“But…”
“It’s not the end of the world, Xander. Your father and I have a house in
Belize. We’ve been planning our exit strategy for months. Once this trial is over, we can disappear, start fresh somewhere private.‘

Amelia sighed again. “That’s not the point. You just need to find out of the shit storm we’re currently in.”

Xander stood there, gaping at his mother. She’d blatantly disregarded his feelings. But he shouldn’t be surprised. It wasn’t the first time, and it definitely wouldn’t be the last.
Defeated, he tossed the manila folder on her carpeted floor and

returned to his room. Any surge of determination to get out of the rot he was currently in evaporated out of his body.
He sank into bed, glancing around his room for any remaining alcohol. But then, his gaze fell on his nightstand. There was a bouquet of chrysanthemums. And then he remembered something very important. The camera Mia had hidden in the vase in the bathroom, the same one she claimed Jane had put her up to.
Jane.
Without thinking, he reached for his phone and dialed.
*Jane*
“Oh, Jane, everything is so beautiful,” Cathe gushed, tugging at one of the wedding dresses.
I inhaled deeply, feeling overwhelmed at all of the white dresses jumping out at me. I’d done this before, but this time felt different. I wanted to find the perfect wedding dress, one my mother didn’t pick.
My gaze shifted to Cathe who was excitedly glancing at all the
at all the gowns. Little Viki was nestled against her chest in a baby carrier, completely oblivious to her mother’s barely contained enthusiasm.

Cathe’s current emotional state was the opposite of mine, and it intensified the overwhelming feeling settling in my stomach.

Still, I followed slowly behind her, my hand instinctively resting on the subtle curve of my belly. I started to wonder if the growing pup could sense how I was feeling.
I don’t think so, Jane, Lucky offered.

I shrugged. I was fine believing what I wanted.
Cathe suddenly stopped moving, eyes dropping to my mid–section. “You know, I can tell your little one is growing. There’s definitely a bump now. Do you know the gender yet?”
I shook my head. “We’re planning to do a gender reveal at the wedding.”
