I couldn’t help it… I laughed. “Says the woman who apparently has a kidnap fetish.”
“Oh my god!” Jane burst out laughing. “I do not have a kidnap fetish! That’s terrible!”
Through the remainder of the drive, we continued poking fun at each other, and I slowly began to realize Jane was right.
It was truly the best Christmas ever.

The words had barely registered before ice–cold water hit Xander’s face. It dragged him violently from his deep sleep. Xander gasped, hands moving frantically to get all of the water off, but the chill had already seeped into his bones.
His wolf growled when he saw his mother standing in front of bed, holding an empty ceramic jug. “There’s more where that came from if you don’t get up this minute.”

“You reek… this entire room reeks of alcohol.” Amelia picked up the empty whiskey bottle sitting on the coffee table beside the bed. “Look at this! Is this what you want to do with your life?”
Xander winced. Her voice was too bloody loud. It made the ache in his head worse, and soon it was pounding relentlessly. His wolf whimpered in pain, already weak from all of the alcohol he’d consumed.
“Why don’t you just leave me alone,” he raised his voice at the last word, and immediately regretted it when his headache intensified.
His mother said nothing, instead, she walked out of the room. He heard her walk down the stairs and into the kitchen. Soon after, she returned with two white tablets and a glass of water.
“Take this.”
Xander stared at the advil as if it were the cause of all his problems. “No.”
“Really? Two months of this pathetic display while I clean up your messes.” She gestured toward all the empty bottles littering the room, the overturned furniture, clothes scattered around, and the general chaos. “You must be ashamed. The fact that an Alpha behaves in such a manner is disgraceful.”
“You fired me!”
“I fired you to protect the company. You harassed an employee on company grounds. Do you realize that Mia could take everything that we’ve… I have worked for?”

Amelia pushed the Advil into his palm and Xander had no choice but to swallow the pills. At least it would give him a clearer head so he can properly yell at his mother.
“Just leave me alone. I have nothing to do with the company, so you can let me ruin my life if that’s what I want.”
“Oh, no. You got us into this ten million dollar lawsuit and you’re going to get us out of it.”

“Not when you’re not taking this seriously. You’ve done nothing to prepare for the hearing. You spend your days drowning in alcohol.”
“I’m not preparing because there’s nothing to prepare for.”
“So you’re just going to roll over and let her take another fortune from you? Haven’t you learned anything from Jane?”
Xander’s eyes narrowed at the same time his wolf growled. “Jane is not like Mia. Jane actually deserved the money. I did nothing to Mia, she’s a vampire.”

“Oh, cry me a river. I’m serious, Xander. We have to fight this.” Amelia pauses to think. “What do you have on Mia? There has to be
something. A sex tape? Photos? Text messages?”
“It’s not that simple. Mia has painted quite the picture for the media. She’s claiming the only reason we entered into a relationship at all was because I threatened to fire her if she didn’t.
