Chapter 138
The moment I secured the weapon, Jane jumped out of the chair and rushed to me. I opened my arms to catch her, and she collided against my body, burying her face into my shoulder.
“I thought…” she began but shook her head. “I’m just glad I’m with you
now.
I held her close, feeling an insane amount of relief flood through me. That was all I cared about, Jane’s safety.
That’s when the police siren’s cut through the air. Red and blue lights reflected against the garage door as the cars approached.
金
My mother turned to me. “Aaron, you have to let them go. Please.”
I stared at her in disbelief. “What?”
“She’s not a criminal, mijo. She’s just a grieving mother who made a terrible mistake. If you tell the police what happened here…”
“She kidnapped my fiance, held her at gun point. Do you have any idea what could have happened if we didn’t get here in time?”
“The
gun wasn’t
even ready to fire. Aaron, please.”
I sighed, still holding Jane. But as her body shuddered against mine once more, I made my decision. “I can’t let this go. I’m sorry.”

“Police! Anyone in there?”
My mom looked disappointed as I walked out to meet the police with Jane by my side. “In here.”
The next few minutes were a blur of activity as officers flooded the garage. I handed over the gun immediately, explaining everything that happened. Jane stayed close to me, her hand never leaving my arm as I recounted the events.
Mom guided Tiffney outside. Her arm was around the older woman’s shoulders. It looked like she was whispering what I assumed were words of comfort to her.
I watched as the officers approached them and snapped handcuffs around Tiffney’s wrists.
“¡Mi hija (My daughter,)” Tiffney cried, pointing a finger at me. “¡Mi hija está en la cárcel por culpa de ustedes! ¡Por lo que le han hecho a nuestra familia! (My daughter is in jail because of you people! Because of what you’ve done to our family!)”
I didn’t care. What mattered was that Jane was safe and by my side.
The lead officer, a tired–looking man with blonde hair approached me. “We’ll need full statements from both of you. But based on what you’ve told us, it sounds like you’re free to go for now. We’ll be in touch if we need anything else.”
Jane and I walked toward my car in silence. We were almost in my car when Jane suddenly stopped walking.
“Aaorn, there’s something I didn’t tell the police.”

My hand froze on the door handle. “What?”
“When you first pulled up the garage door. There was someone else there. Tiffney’s son. The moment you appeared, he bolted through the back door.”
I blinked at her“Why didn’t you tell them? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Jane shrugged. “He was just a kid, Aaron. He looked terrified. I just couldn’t add another charge to the list.”
I said nothing at first. Instead, I helped her into the car before turning around and slipping into the Driver’s seat.
And as soon as we were out of earshot, and I could see my mother had left the scene and was now driving ahead of us, I turned to look at my fiance.
“Jane, what were you doing out of your hotel room in the first place.”
“I was…”
“You were supposed to stay put.” I felt my hands tighten on the steering wheel. “You’re pregnant. It’s not just you I have to look out for anymore.”
“I’m sorry. I know you’re angry, and you have every right to be. I just….. I didn’t like being alone. I wanted to see the city a little.”
“And instead you got kidnapped.”
“I didn’t exactly plan on getting kidnapped, Aaron. It’s not like I saw ‘get held at gunpoint‘ on my morning itinerary.”

Damn it. I couldn’t be mad at her. Not when she was sitting next to me so fragile and so pregnant with my pup.
“You know what the crazy part is? Despite everything that happened tonight, this has been the best Christmas I’ve ever had.”
I glanced at her in surprise. “Getting kidnapped made it the best Christmas ever?”
She laughed. “Not the kidnapping part, obviously. But everything else. Your mom charging in there like some kind of action hero… it was amazing.”
“Plus,” she added, and I could hear the grin in her voice, “I’m starting to think you might have a thing for damsels in distress. Do you have some time of hero complex, Aaron?”
