Through the windshield, I could see Mom’s taillights already disappearing around the corner. Fen growled. I had to leave right now if I wanted to make sure Jane and my mother were safe.
“Stay here and wait for the police,” I said in a gentle voice. Behind her, Bonnie and Diana were frozen to the spot.
They’ll be okay, Fen said. We need to go get Jane.
He was right. I stepped on the engine and drove out of the parking lot.
I passed the police cars as I increased my speed. There was only one thing on my mind. I needed to catch up to my mother.
My mother’s red ferrari stood out among the sea of cars, weaving dangerously through traffic. She cut between cars recklessly, forcing other drivers to slam on their brakes. I caught her gaze from her side mirror, and instead of hitting her brakes, she stepped on the engine.
Damn it. I flashed my high beams, horning at her. Slow down. Pull over. Stop this madness.
Still, she ignored me. I didn’t even think it was possible, but somehow, she managed to increase her speed and zoomed off again.
The chase soon turned into a dangerous game. And my mother was winning. She seemed to know every shortcut, every back alley, every single bump in the road.

But I didn’t give up, and suddenly, she veered right into a residential neighborhood. The area was empty, no people or kids crossing the street, no cars parked around. This place looked well and truly deserted. When I looked at my mother’s car, she was pulling into a driveway by the right.
I slammed on the brakes, my car skidding to a stop directly behind hers. I managed to stop just in time to prevent our bumpers from making
contact.
Before I could even turn off the engine, she was already out of her car and sprinting toward the front door. I quickly rushed out.
“Stop!” I yelled. But my mother wasn’t listening. She stomped her way to the front door, raised her fist and began hammering against the wood violently.
“Tiffney!” She screamed. “Open the door! Open it now!”
Nobody answered. I paused, and tapped into Fen’s energy. I focused my hearing, and noticed a squirming sound coming from the right side of the house. Without hesitation, I began to move toward the garage, and what would you know? The door was slightly open.
I pulled it up.
The scene that greeted me was like something from a nightmare. Jane sat in a wooden chair in the center of the garage.
Tiffney stood behind her, both hands wrapped around a gun pointed directly at the back of Jane’s head.
Mom suddenly ceased her frantic knocking. Within seconds, she

appeared beside me, taking in the scene. The look in Tiffney’s eyes was pure evil.
And then, my mother stepped into the garage approaching Tiffney without fear. “Tiffney, por favor…” they launched into a heated argument, voices raised.
The gun was still pressed behind Jane’s head. Even in this situation, she looked at me reassuringly. I felt her wolf reaching out to mine.
I’m okay, Jane said. I’m not hurt. Our pup is fine.
As Tiffney was distracted, she slowly began inching off her seat.
However, before she could even take a step, Tiffney turned around and adjusted the gun to Jane’s new position. Jane sank back into her chair, but her eyes never left mine.
“Tiffney stop this right now. Throw that gun away. You’re going to end up in jail regardless of whether you take things further or not. Just top this.”
“No me importa. Mi hija es todo lo que me queda, ¡y me la quitaste! (I don’t care. My daughter is all I have left, and you took her from me!)”

“This won’t save her. It will only make things worse. You know better than this.”

Tiffney’s eyes widened as if she was just seeing the gun in her hands for the first time. She gasped and took a staggering step back. Tears began to stream down her face just as the weapon slipped from her fingers, clattering against the concrete floor.

I moved immediately, and picked up the gun before anyone else could react. As my fingers closed the weapon, I realized with a mixture of relief and disbelief that the safety had been on the entire time.
