“She won’t hate me once she realizes who really loves her and who is keeping her away from me.” Xander showed so much conviction that Rain had no option but to spin the chair around and begin the shave.
And that one sentence was the cause of most of Xander’s problems. In his mind, he constructed a narrative that suited him quite nicely. Jane had left not because of his actions, but due to Aaron’s interference. Aaron had stolen his wife from him, and he was going to get her back.
The clippers moved swiftly, taking off every lock of hair till there was a mop of dark hair pooled around his feet. And then, with a new, hollowed–out look, Xander set out for his next destination.

He needed to show this to Jane, so she would take pity on him. He knew her very well. She was so kind that she wouldn’t be able to turn him away. And he knew that deep down she still loved him. He just had to find a way to reach her.
He approached the reception desk where Swan, Jane’s secretary, looked up in surprise.
“I need to see Jane. Is she in?”
Swan’s eyes lingered on his bald head, taking in the change in appearance. “Yes…”
Xander nodded slowly, then pushed the door open.

And there she was, his Jane, looking as beautiful as ever in a black pantsuit. Just as he predicted, Jane stood immediately when she saw him, hand flying to her chest.
“Xander, my God! What happened to you?” She moved around her desk toward him. “You look…are you sick?”
He opened his mouth to respond, but then he noticed that something was shining on her left finger. It was so bright that it was practically blinding him.
Xander already knew what it was before he even looked. There, on her ring finger, sat a diamond engagement ring. And that was when he realized it was too late.
She was no longer ‘his‘ Jane.
The universe had to be playing some cruel joke on him, because there was no way Jane was engaged to someone else. It was impossible.
He found himself pointing at the ring. “What is that?”
“An engagement ring,” she replied simply.
“I know. But why are you wearing it? Is it some new fashion trend? Are you just trying to ward off men? That’s it, right?”
“Xander…” Jane sighed. She looked at him like he was a child. “I’m engaged to Aaron.”
“No, that’s not…”
“And I’m carrying his pup,” she added.
A deafening silence followed. Xander’s entire world was crumbling

down. Through the entire divorce process, it never occurred to him that he was actually losing Jane. He always thought they were going to find their way back to each other. And now that damned Aaron was ruining things for him.
“You’re pregnant. You’re pregnant and engaged to that meddler,” he repeated.
“Xander…”
“He’s no better than me!” Xander felt himself explode. “He’s exactly like me. How can you not see that?”
“No, he’s not. He doesn’t make decisions without consulting me. He doesn’t bring other women into our relationship, he doesn’t—”
“But I can change!” Xander was desperate. He could feel Jane slipping through his fingers. A simple shave of his head wouldn’t save him now. He needed to make her see clearly.
“Jane, listen to me. I can raise both babies. Mia’s pup and yours. I’ll raise Aaron’s like mine if I have to. We can be a family, all of us together. I can give you everything you want.”
Jane stared at him with pity. “Xander, stop. Just stop.”
“I’m serious. I know I made mistakes, but I can fix this. I can be the father you want me to be, the husband you need. We can make this work,” he pleaded.
“No. You don’t even know that Mia has been lying to you all this time. Why do you think you’re competent enough to be a father?” she asked.

Xander felt his knees weaken. He grabbed the back of a chair to steady himself.
“That’s not…she wouldn’t… It’s mine…”
But even as he said the words, he knew Jane wasn’t lying to him. Damn it. Life was really dealing with him today. How would he ever recover from this?
