Chapter 119
“I came to let you know what Aaron is really like. Did he tell you he pushed me down the stairs?” Her eyes studied me maliciously.
Lucky growled viciously, fueled with the urge to protect our own. I straightened my spine and stared her down.
“I believe Aaron’s story. Whatever version of events you’re trying to sell, I’m not buying it,” I warned her.
“Of course you do. Open your eyes, Jane.”
Something snapped inside me. I was tired of people trying to manipulate situations to suit their needs.
“You know what, Yve? You’re exactly like my ex–husband. Selfish, self–serving, and completely incapable of taking responsibility for the destruction that you caused. You don’t deserve happiness. All you do is destroy the people who care about you. And guess what? You have no one now.”
Yve’s nostrils flared. I was almost surprised to see her like this.
However, this person standing in front of me aligned with the image of the woman who had been careless with her son.
“You think you know everything, don’t you?” she hissed, stepping closer. “You think you’ve got Aaron all figured out. But here’s the thing…” She grinned. “Aaron still wants me. There’s a lot more going on between us than you know about.”
I stared at her for a moment. She looked unhinged, delusional, crazy.

What a shame. I thought that, after all these years, maybe Yve would be reasonable enough to provide Aaron with the answers he needed. But she was just as deranged as Xander and his entourage.
With a menacing gaze, I stepped closer. Lucky’s growl intensified when Yve staggered back.
“Now, you listen to me. You’re not going to come in here and ruin things.” Yve opened her mouth to speak, but I shut her up. “You’ve been nothing but a nuisance since you got back from prison. Did you learn nothing? How pathetic can one person be? You can’t accept that Aaron has found someone better.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“I know exactly what I’m talking about. You’re bitter, broken, lonely, and desperate. You’re nothing but a clear example of when someone lets their selfishness destroy everything good in their life.” I let the words sink in before I continued. “Stay away from me. Stay away from Aaron, and find someone else’s life to destroy.”
Without waiting for her response, I turned on my heel and walked away. I didn’t look back; instead raised my head high as I climbed into
my car.
I sighed in relief the moment the door shut behind me. I was free. Free from my past, from Xander, from Yve. I was completely, utterly free.
Three hours later, I stood in front of my full–length mirror. I slipped into the dress I’d chosen for my date with Aaron. It was a bold choice, something I didn’t think I’d ever have the courage to wear.

It was a body–con, deep midnight blue that clung to my every curve. The dress was so short, it ended at mid–thigh, supported by six–inch heels that made my legs look endless. The back, however, was the star of the show, completely backless and showing off the results of all those self–defense classes.
I finished my makeup and tied my hair up into a ponytail. I looked different, sexy even. So, why did I feel like I was about to throw up?
Because you think you look ridiculous, Lucky explained.
Well, you can’t blame me. I haven’t dressed like this in so long.
It doesn’t matter. You look beautiful.
My ears suddenly twitched at the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. I looked out of my bedroom window to see Aaron climbing out of his car. He looked confident and handsome as ever in his black,
well–tailored suit.
I grabbed my tiny purse that could only hold my lipstick and phone and began the walk downstairs. However, when I got to the front door, I paused. I fidgeted a bit, fiddling with the strap of my dress.
Go! Lucky prodded. He’s waiting for you.
With a deep breath, I hooked my fingers around the door handle and pulled. Aaron’s eyes snapped to me as I approached, eyes widening, pupils dilating as they traveled from my face down to my heels and back up again.
“God, Jane,” he breathed. “You look…absolutely stunning.”
“You don’t think it’s too much?”

“Too much?” Aaron laughed, then grabbed my waist, effectively closing the distance between us. “Baby, there’s no such thing as too much when it comes to you.”
