Chapter 118
“The union is automatically terminated as of this date. The court is adjourned.” Judge Daniel raised the gavel for the last time and rose to his feet.
Hailey rushed to me. “We did it, Jane. It’s over.”
I was still staring at the now–empty bench. I was in utter disbelief. For the longest time, I’d wished to be divorced from Xander, but now that it was official, I didn’t know what to do with myself.
I began gathering my things mechanically. Hailey was already organizing my files, talking my ears off about the next steps, but I didn‘ t hear anything she said.
The only thing I heard as I rose to my feet and started moving with Hailey was a pair of familiar footsteps approaching.
“You win, Jane. You always win,” I heard Xander say from behind me.
My spine stiffened automatically. But I didn’t turn around, nor did I grace him with a response. Instead, I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead and continued moving.
The invisible weight that had been resting on my chest since I married him finally lifted. I felt free, relieved even.
It’s all over, Lucky mused, more excited than anyone else in this
courtroom.

Twenty minutes later, I sat in the conference room adjacent to the courtroom with Hailey by my side. She handed me a pen as she slid the document toward me.
Written in bold letters at the top was: FINAL DIVORCE DECREE.
I didn’t hesitate as I scribbled my signature on the dotted line Hailey pointed out to me. The notary, a petite woman, leaned forward and pressed her official seal on the document.
She looked at me with a smile. “Congratulations, Ms. Ashford. It’s official.”
From the corner of my eyes, I saw Roman and Xander rise, heading to the door. But while Roman’s movements were swift and deliberate, Xander dragged his feet, throwing glances my way.
I ignored him and kept my eyes fixed on the notary as she organized her papers. And then I heard Xander suck in a breath, followed by the sound of retreating footsteps and the door closing.
Without warning, Hailey pulled me into a warm hug. L-
“Well, that was dramatic. Just promise me one thing,” she said as she pulled back. “No more billionaires. My heart can’t take another case like this one.”
I wanted to say I didn’t plan on getting divorced again, but I just laughed instead. “I think I can manage that.” I quickly gathered my things and hiked my purse up.
“You seem awfully eager to get out of here. Got somewhere important to be?”
I felt heat creep up my cheek. “I just… I have plans.”

“Aha! Someone’s waiting for you, isn’t he?” The blush deepened, confirming her suspicions. Hailey laughed. “Good for you, Jane. You deserve it.”
With one last smile, I pushed open the conference room door and stepped into the hallway. My heart felt lighter as I realized that I had my whole life ahead of me.
As I hurried forward, eager to get to my car, my shoulders collided with someone coming from the opposite direction.
“Oh, I’m so sorry…” I began, looking up to apologize.
But then, a familiar voice responded, “Hi Jane.”
*Jane*
I found myself staring into bright green eyes I didn’t think I’d ever see again. Lucky had also picked up on her scent; she’d committed it to memory after being in close contact with her wolf.
“Yve…” I murmured as I took in her appearance. She stuck out like a sore thumb, dressed in a faded gray hoodie, which was too big for her frame, and jeans that looked like it’d been washed way too many times.
Her once luxurious brown hair now stood in tangled waves on her head, as if she hadn’t run a comb through the strands in days. My eyes drifted to the fading bruise on her forehead.
That’s probably from the fall Aaron told us about, Lucky offered.
It was healing slowly. Maybe because her wolf was weak.
“Jane,” she exclaimed, lips twisting into a bitter expression. “Fancy meeting you here.”

I tilted my head. What was she playing at? She obviously came here to
see me.
She laughed nervously when I didn’t respond and shoved her hands into the pockets of her hoodie. “You once invited me to lunch a few weeks ago. You seemed like a nice person then.”
“Yve, what are you doing here?”
