Chapter 116
His eyes darted to Roman who was making subtle hand gestures for him to stop talking. But it was too late, Xander was on a roll.
“Someone who brought me back to life.” His eyes widened when there was a collective gasp in the room. Even Roman started shaking his head, fingers flying to pinch the bridge of his nose. His mouth opened and closed as he tried and failed to find the words.
“No… I…” He sucked in a breath. “Mia isn’t my mistress. She’s just my Beta. She needed shelter and as her Alpha, I was obligated to help her.”
“Are you telling this court that your relationship with your Beta remained purely professional?” Hailey carried on.
“Yes. Nothing ever happened between us.”
“Nothing,” my lawyer repeated. “And this Beta, how long has she been living in your home?”
“Six months, but…”
“Six months. She couldn’t find a place during this time? You lived with her for six months, three of which were without your wife in the same house. And you maintain that the relationship was purely
professional?”
“Objection, Your Honor.” Roman jumped to his feet again. “Leading.”
Judge Daniel waved his hand dismissively. “Overruled. Answer the question, Mr. Blackwood.”

Xander’s jaw clenched. “She’s not my mistress if that’s what you’re implying.”
“I’m asking directly, Mr. Blackwood. Have you been intimate with your Beta?” Hailey pressed.
“She’s not…damn it!” He finally cracked. “I love Jane. She’s my everything, my mate, my wife…everything. But this is also her fault. She shut me out. But I never stopped loving her. Never.”
Hailey didn’t move an inch. She just stared at him calmly. “Mr. Blackwood, love is not control or coercion. You claim you love my client, but have you stopped to consider her needs?”
No, Lucky answered for him. She was right. It was all about Xander, what he wanted, what he needed. Never about me.
However, when I looked up at him, I wasn’t prepared for the haunted look in his eyes. It was obvious Hailey’s words had reached some part of him that even I hadn’t been able to reach.
And finally, he sighed, shoulders sagging in defeat. “I don’t want to do this anymore.”
My heart threatened to beat out of my chest. What was he talking about?
“You don’t want to do what, Mr. Blackwood?” Hailey asked.
“I don’t want to fight anymore. I’ll agree to the divorce.”
“Xander, what are you…” Roman began, but the judge cut him off.
“Order!” Judge Daniel hit the gavel. “We’ll have a short recess and
continue in an hour.

I breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t the end, but we were getting somewhere.
*Jane*
I was still reeling from the past hour of intense questioning. So much so that I didn’t move an inch from my seat. Xander and his lawyer were deep in conversation, and the people sitting in the gallery seemed to be going crazy, judging by all the noise that surrounded us.
It felt like I was having an out–of–body experience. Everything around me happened in slow motion as I kept replaying the events of the past hour in my head.
“Jane?” I blinked. When I looked up, Hailey was standing in front of me. “Are you okay?”
I managed a nod. But that was a blatant lie. I was far from okay. This entire trial was playing out like a horror movie, even though Hailey was holding her own. I swallowed, but nothing went past my throat.

“Look, the case isn’t over.” Hailey pulled my attention to her once more. “You have to stay alert. Don’t let any of this get to you.”

Listen to Hailey, everything will be okay, Lucky said in an attempt to encourage me. I told you, this will all end today.
I forced my throat to move again, and after a labored attempt, I finally managed to swallow. It wasn’t exactly that I feared we’d lose, but Xander’s outbursts had taken me by surprise. I’d never seen him so… so… I didn’t even have the words.
Hailey eventually settled into her seat, rifling through her files. Xander and his lawyer were still locked in what appeared to be a tense conversation. The courtroom buzzed with loud murmurs, but I just sat

there, staring blankly into space, barely aware of any of it.
After a short while, the door in front opened, and Judge Daniel walked back in. His lips were pressed into a thin line as he took his seat at the bench.
