Chapter 112
I found my friends at our usual table in the back corner. Three of the most influential men in the city nursing brown liquor.
Aiden looked up first, his ice–blue eyes taking in my appearance. I could see the disapproval on his scarred face as I approached.
“Well, well,” Frank drawled, his southern accent coming through. “Look who decided to grace us with his presence.”
Kol snorted. “I thought you’d gotten yourself killed doing something spectacularly stupid.”
Next to take a dig at me was Aiden. “Told you he’d survive. Aaron’s too stubborn to die, even when he’s being an absolute fucking idiot.”
I slid into the empty chair across from them, signaling the bartender for my usual.
“Let me guess,” Aiden began, taking another sip of his drink. “You went to see her. Alone. After we specifically told you it was a bad idea.”
“Yeah,” Kol interjected. “You just waltzed right into your ex–wife’s lair like a lamb to the slaughter. What’s next Aaron? Taking candy from strangers?”
I rolled my eyes as they burst into laughter. Frank didn’t join in, he just nursed his drink and watched.
“It wasn’t like that. I didn’t push her. She pushed me first. I didn’t lay a

finger on her. She came at me, lost her balance and fell. That’s it.”
“And you couldn’t have seen that coming? Come on, Aaron. You know how she operates,” Kol said.
Aiden nodded. “The fact that she got hurt could have been used against you. What if…”
“Hey…” Frank finally spoke. “Ya’ll need to back off. He’s still grieving. Give the man a break for crying out loud.” Then he turned to look at me. “She’s licking her wounds right now. Whatever she’s planning, it won’t happen for a while. You can rest easy now.”
“Thank you.” I nodded at him, then cleared my throat. “There’s something else.” I felt all three of their gazes on me. “Jane’s divorce trial is coming up in two weeks.”
Kol and Aiden’s expressions suddenly turned serious.
“I don’t want anything that could complicate that for her. She’s been through enough hell with her ex–husband. The last thing is Yve’s drama spilling over into her life.”
“Smart thinking. Yve might try to make some noise,” Aiden said.
I shook my head. “Frank’s right. She won’t try immediately. By the time she gets her act together, the trial will be over and I’ll probably be out of the country.”
I paused to scratch the back of my neck nervously. “Actually, I’m planning to propose right after the trial.”
Kol threw his head back and laughed. “Well, I’ll be damned.”

“Shut up,” I muttered, but I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.

Frank tipped his glass up in a silent toast. “You must love that woman very much.”
It wasn’t a question, and I wasn’t about to deny the truth. “It’s never been a secret.”
For the first time in forever, I finally felt like someone truly understood
- me.
*Jane*
Today is D–day, Lucky whispered to me as I studied my reflection in the mirror.
I couldn’t agree more. This day had been a long time coming. Way before I made the decision to file. And while I’d longed to finally get that signature on paper and make this all official, I couldn’t help the nerves gathering in the pit of my stomach.
My fingers trembled as I hooked the golden hoops through my ears. I smoothed the lapels of my charcoal suit. Beneath it, I’d chosen a red silk blouse in a deliberate attempt to project the confidence I didn’t really feel at the moment.
I pressed my lips together, applying the final coat of burgundy lipstick. I saw it as war paint, ideal for what I was about to walk into.
We’ll be rid of him soon, I said to Lucky as I worked to twist my hair into a tight bun.
About damn time, she replied. This is all going to end today. We’ll
make sure of that.

I glanced at my reflection once more before grabbing my bag and walking out. The car ride to the court was a blur, and before I knew it, I’d parked my car in the garage and began the walk to our assigned
courtroom.
As I climbed the steps leading up to the Werewolf Supreme Court, the hair on the back of my neck stood. I paused mid–step and looked to the left, then right. Shifters moved around the building all dressed in sharp suits. But there was no visible threat in sight.
