“Thank you.” I nodded at her and made my way down the hall. My legs felt heavy, my heartbeat was so loud I wondered if the entire hospital could hear it. I had no idea what awaited me.
I saw her room number the moment I turned right. Through the small window in the door, I caught a glimpse of her. Yve was sitting upright on the hospital bed, looking far less damaged than my guilt–ridden braid had imagined.
A simple Band–Aid covered what must have been the gash on her forehead. There was a darkened purple bruise around the skin on her left eye. She didn’t look at all like the broken image I’d been picturing.
With a deep breath, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
“Aaron!” To my surprise, Yve was smiling at me, widely. “Please tell me you brought chocolate. Or anything edible, really. This hospital jelly is absolutely awful.”
The casual greeting caught me off–guard. I’d expected her to accuse me, to threaten me, not welcome me and complain about hospital food.
“I… no, I didn’t bring anything.”
She rolled her eyes. “Typical. Well, sit down at least. You look like you’re about to bolt.”
I remained standing near the door. I was still trying to process her unexpectedly cheerful demeanor. “Yve, about last night…”

“Oh, that,” she waved a dismissive hand. “You didn’t push me. I know you didn’t.”
Relief flooded through me. Even Fen howled inside me. But it was all short–lived.
“However,” she continued, and there was a poisonous tone in her voice. “You did come to my house. You did upset me. You did make me so emotional that I wasn’t watching where I was going. So really, it’s still your fault, isn’t it?”
Before I could respond, she inhaled deeply, her head tilting back. My blood ran cold. In my rush to get here, I hadn’t thought to take a shower, or at least change my clothes.
“Choclolate.” She sniffed again, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “And lavender. You’ve been with Jane, haven’t you? This morning. In her bed.”
“That’s none of your…”
“I want you back, Aaron.”
I stared at her, certain I’d misheard. “What?”
“I want you back,” she repeated, sitting up straighter despite her injuries.
“I took Ethan because he was the key.” She said it so matter–of–factly, as if murdering our son was just another mistake in a long list.
I was about to lose it.
“The key to what?”

Her voice dropped to an intimate whisper that was just sickening. “To unlock the door to your heart. All I wanted was you. But accidents happen. It wasn’t my fault.”
“You’re insane.”
“Am I?” She winced slightly as she leaned forward “Let me come back. Let me prove I’ve changed.”
“No. Never.”
“Aaron, just listen to me.”
“No. You’re sick. The doctors are obviously not doing their jobs right because a screw has gone loose in your head.” I whispered, my hands beginning to shake with barely contained rage. “You cheated on me. You slept with my friend and you just left. Just like that.”
“Marriage is sacred, Aaron! For better or for worse, in sickness and in health. Those vows meant something.”
“Not to you they didn’t.”
“Prison rehabilitated me. I’ve changed.”
I scoffed. “Lies.”
“Sebastian seduced me. It wasn’t my fault, Aaron.”
I stared at her in disbelief. Even now, she couldn’t take responsibility for her own actions. “Sebastian didn’t put a gun to your head, Yve.”
“I know that now. I’m not crazy enough to think you’re automatically the right choice for me anymore. I know I have to earn you back.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Yve. You’re fucking crazy.”
Yve didn’t say anything for a long minute. Then her expression hardened, every sign of friendliness completely gone. When she spoke again her voice was cold.
“Here’s what’s going to happen Aaron.” She settled back into her pillow, fixing me with a venomous gaze. “You’re going to break up with your precious Jane. You’re going to come back to me.”
“Like hell I will.”
“Or,” she continued as if I hadn’t spoken. “I’ll call my parole officer. I’ll let him know how you came to my house last night, how you threatened me, how you pushed me down those stairs. I’ll tell him how you’ve been stalking me since I got out, how afraid I am of you.”
The room started to spin. “You just said I didn’t push you.”
