But Aaron didn’t answer. I could hear his heartbeat… It sounded guilty. His eyes darted around, moving to mine and then just as quickly back to his hands. He swallowed hard, Adam’s apple bobbing as he did so.
And instantly I knew.
“You went to her house.”
It wasn’t a question. I knew it. Lucky knew it. He still didn’t say anything, confirming what I already knew to be true. But what I couldn‘ t understand was why. Why would he go there and not tell me about it?
“Did you push her?” I blurted out before I could stop myself. Aaron’s head snapped up so fast I heard his neck crack. His eyes went wide… wider than I’d ever seen them and the scent of shock wrapped around his. I regretted my words when I saw the pure, unadulterated horror in his eyes.
I felt guilty.
“What? No!” He seemed just as appalled by the suggestion as I was. “Jane, how could you even… I would never…”
His protests died in his throat. Aaron’s stance had quickly turned defensive. I didn’t blame him. I’d just accused him of something very serious. I wanted to reach out to touch him, but I wasn’t sure it was such a good idea.

talking, and she got upset, and she stumbled backward. I tried to catch her, but…” His hands shook as he demonstrated, reaching out toward the empty air. “She hit her head on the way down and just… went limp.
“She lost consciousness?”
He nodded. “I carried her to my car, drove straight to the emergency room. The doctor said she has a concussion and some bruising along her ribs where she hit the banister. They said… they said she might not wake up until tomorrow.”

He was so pale and with the way he kept swallowing hard, I feared he was about to be sick. I finally reached out and placed a hand on his

That single gesture seemed to break him.
“Jane, what if she wakes up… and tells them I pushed her? What if she doesn’t remember it right? What if…”

wrapped my arms around him. I’d completely forgotten I was still naked as I held him tightly.
His body was ice–cold, shaking against mine. When he collapsed into my embrace, I felt the fight leave him completely.
“Everything is going to be okay,” I murmured into his hair. But I didn’t even believe the words. I wasn’t sure how this was going to end, and I didn’t have so much faith in the situation. Still, I continued to stroke his hair and reassure him. “It’s going to be okay.”
I held him, soothing him quietly. My mind however raced with questions. Why did he even go to her house in the first place? What were they talking about that made her so upset she stumbled backward? And most importantly, what the hell happened?
I couldn’t voice any of these out. All Aaron needed was comfort. I couldn’t possibly bombard him with all of these questions now.
“Can I stay tonight? I can’t… I can’t be alone right now.”
My mind briefly drifted to the news I’d wanted to share with Aaron. That would also have to wait. The only thing I had to focus on was the fact that this man needed me. Divorce proceedings be damned. I would be there for him if that’s what he needed.
“Of course. We’ll get through this together.”
Some of the tension left his shoulders as I led him into the room. Aaron practically tore off his clothes and collapsed on the bed only in his boxers. I turned to the closet to grab a robe before joining him. I slipped under the covers and he immediately reached for me.
