For better or worse, my life would never be the same.
I was still in a daze when I stepped into the elevator. My gaze shifted to my reflection. My cheeks were still flushed and slightly stained with the tears from earlier. I definitely looked like someone who’d just received life–changing news.
Which was more than accurate.
The elevator doors opened and I stepped out still in a daze. But as I approached my office, I noticed a familiar figure standing behind Swan‘ s desk. Her posture was rigid, filled with pure disdain.
Alin.
“Ms. Ashford,” she said, giving me a once–over. “You look…flushed. Having a pleasant afternoon?”
“It’s just been an overwhelming first day.” I nodded at her as I moved toward my door, but Alin didn’t turn back around. Instead, she followed me through the door and into my office. “Do you need something?”
“Actually, yes. I wanted to personally inform you about our upcoming partnership.” She paused, meeting my gaze. I didn’t react. “The Blackwood Group deal is moving forward faster than anticipated. We’ll be having a kick–off meeting tomorrow morning. You, myself, Richard and…” She paused again, looking me dead in the eyes. “Alpha Xander.”
Her voice rose an octave as she said his name, making it clear that she

was fishing for a reaction. It was already pretty obvious from the way she touched her glasses every time she spoke.
Still, I didn’t react. I kept my expression perfectly neutral.
“I understand. Will the meeting details be sent via mail?” I asked.
“Of course. Though I do hope your…personal history won’t interfere with what promises to be a very lucrative partnership.”
I still didn’t flinch.
“You don’t need to worry about my professionalism, Alin. For me, Xander is now just another business deal. Nothing more.” I turned the door handle and held it open calmly. “If there’s nothing else, I have calls to return before the end of the day.”
Alin’s eyes narrowed. I’d been the one to get a reaction after all.
*Jane*
I wasn’t proud of the smile that threatened to escape when I saw the dumbfounded look on Alin’s face. She obviously didn’t expect me to push back. For some weird reason, she’s had an attitude ever since I walked through the glass doors of Ominent. And I knew this small move wouldn’t magically put an end to all of it.
At least, it would show her I wasn’t a push over.
Alin cleared her throat, avoiding eye contact. “You’re right. I should let you get back to work. That’s what you were hired for after all.”
“Yes, my time is very precious,” I shot back.
Alin still didn’t look pleased, but she didn’t say anything else. She

shook her head and walked through the door and out of my office. I shut the door behind her and began waving my hand through the air ast if I was trying to ward off any negative energy she might have spread by being in my office alone.
But now that she was gone, my mind drifted back to the test in my purse. I was going to have to deal with that in… I checked my watch… four hours.
I spent the last hour of my first day at work revising and approving marketing campaigns. I was truly impressed by how I was able to focus on work even though my mind was a jumbled mess.
The moment the clock struck 5pm, I was out of my seat. I jumped into my car and drove home in a hurry.
Everything is going to be fine. Aaron is going to be so happy, Lucky said.
I believed her. But a part of me wondered if all this would be too soon for Aaron especially since the death of his son was still so raw for him.
Or maybe he would count this as a blessing. Relax, Jane. It’s going to be a beautiful day. Lucky offered.
She’s right. It’s all going to be fine. Aaron and I are going to have a
pup.
“Grant,” I called out as I pulled my car into the driveway. He came running.
He bowed lightly. “Ma’am.”
“Do we have any strawberries?”

“Yes. I’ll have them brought up for you.”
“Thank you, Grant. That’ll be all.”
He nodded once more then disappeared. I headed straight for the kitchen. I opened the fridge, grabbed some drinks and began to make a virgin mojito. No more alcohol for me. If I’d known this was going to happen, I probably would have had one last hurrah.
