Chapter 105
*Jane*
My entire world was spinning. I stared at the test again. The two red lines were still there, but I couldn’t make myself understand what I was reading. It wasn’t possible…it just couldn’t be.
But the evidence is right there. We’re having a pup, Lucky said.
I shook my head frantically even though I was alone in the bathroom. I was hallucinating, right?
My brain refused to process what my eyes were seeing. The plastic stick in my hand might as well have been written in a foreign language. The two red lines stared back at me, clear as day. There was absolutely no room for doubt. I was well and truly pregnant.
Yet, a pit was beginning to form in my stomach.
The pregnancy test felt impossibly heavy in my trembling fingers, almost as if it was heavier than my entire weight. My legs gave out, and I sank onto the closed toilet seat lid. My free hand moved of its own accord, pressing against my stomach.
Oh my goodness! This was all real. It was actually happening.
I was in utter disbelief. After seven long, agonizing years of fertility treatments, of monthly disappointments that felt like small deaths, of doctors with their monotonic voices telling me my chances were diminishing with each cycle. Seven years of my privacy being
completely disregarded, of being filled with hormones that made myself

and Lucky so uncomfortable.
After seven years of artificial chemicals flooding my system, I never thought this day would come.
It didn’t take much to make me feel defeated. Xander definitely saw to it. He always gave me the cold shoulder and showed me resentment every time another test came back negative.
He would always drive it home that it was all my fault.
“It’s biology, Jane. Simple biology,” he would always say.
He broke me, and made me believe that I could never conceive.
It’s almost ironic, Lucky noted. Now you know who the real problem
was.
You’re right. I’m just in full disbelief. I didn’t think this was even possible. Xander…
Xander brainwashed you into thinking you were faulty, my wolf pointed out. He made you question your existence as your role as a woman. You shouldn’t even think about him. You should celebrate!
Lucky was right. Of course she was. I shouldn’t be thinking about Xander. He obviously didn’t think about what I needed when he paraded Mia around like a prize.
I wanted to laugh in his face. I’d suspected Mia’s child wasn’t Xander’s, but now? It was confirmed. Xander had no idea what was waiting for
him.
Oh, who was I kidding? I couldn’t hold back the laughter that bubbled out of me. It started small, but it intensified with each passing minute,

growing louder and more manic.
I doubled over, clutching my stomach tighter with the pregnancy test still in my hand, laughing until tears streamed down my face and my ribs ached.
The bathroom door suddenly swung open and the purple–haired cashier stopped dead in the doorway, her once bored eyes now wide as she took in the sight of me. I could only imagine what was going through her head. A woman in an expensive business suit, sitting on a toilet seat, laughing like a maniac while holding a pregnancy test.
“Oh!” She took a step back.
I cleared my throat, trying to compose myself. I wiped at my eyes with the back of my hand.
“I’m not crazy,” I reassured her, still struggling to suppress a few giggles. “I’m just…it’s been a very strange day.”

She still stared at me as if I’d grown a second head and maybe a third eye. So I got up, stuffed the pregnancy test in my purse and fled. The moment I stepped outside, the laughter died completely.
Have a talk with Aaron, Lucky suggested.

I pulled out my phone before I could talk myself out of it. This was an emergency. Surely, Hailey would understand if I broke her very strict “keep your distance” rule.
Can you sneak in to see me tonight? I need to talk.
I typed the message and hit send.
He responded immediately: See you at 8.

I sucked in a deep, shaky breath before depositing my phone back into my purse. I forced myself to move, heading in the direction of the office, but my mind was all over the place. I was a mess. This day would either go down in history as the most terrifying or the happiest day of my life.
