Chapter 104
Is he trying to upset you? Lucky asked, already growling at the barely veiled insult.
I have no idea.
Lucky and I were still debating his true motives for being here when Xander’s voice cut through our conversation.
“Jane…”
I turned to face him. “Yes?”
“Well, you just look…” He paused, leaning in slightly as his wolf sniffed me. “Different.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“It only happens when a woman has someone new in her life.” He suddenly gasped dramatically. “Is there someone new? Perhaps a new boyfriend?”
I frowned. Xander was acting weird. He kept speaking to me like we were friends and expected me to divulge all my secrets.
My frown deepened when I noticed his gaze raking over my body, particularly the cleavage that popped out of my blouse.
“You’re even wearing a push–up bra. You never did that for me,” he noted.
My mouth fell open. I must have stumbled into some sort of alternate

reality where Xander believed he could get away with saying things like that.
He had the gall to smile as he watched me. He licked his lips slightly, eyes never leaving mine. That’s when it hit me. Xander was testing his limits, seeing if he could sway me or if he could get me to crack.
“Hey… I’m just saying. Maybe we’d still be together if you’d…”
“That’s it,” I said, pointing at the door. “You need to leave.”
Xander smiled again. That expression was getting on my last nerve. I expected him to protest or say something else that was highly inappropriate.
Instead, he nodded, buttoning his suit jacket as he rose to his feet.
“Okay,” he said simply. He turned and walked to the door, but stopped before opening it. He fixed me with a meaningful gaze. “I’ll see you soon, Jane.”
“In court, yes.”
”
He chuckled. “I don’t care. Fact remains, we’ll be seeing each other again soon.” And with that, he grabbed the door handle and left.
As soon as I was left alone, my hands began to shake with the force of my anger. I’d been holding myself back throughout that entire
interaction. The anger now manifested in my heart and hands.
I hated how he affected me, how he always managed to rouse some sort of emotion out of me. I hated it with a passion.
Who does he think he is to judge us? He’s nothing more than our past, Lucky said.

I wanted to agree with her, but his words were stuck in my head. He said I looked different. Did I? I didn’t think I changed one bit, but something about it bothered me so much that I abandoned my desk and rushed to the ladies‘ room.
Xander couldn’t be right, I chanted as I pushed the doors open. Thankfully, it was empty. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, observing every little detail on my body. And then I saw it.
There was a slight change in my features, but the more I looked at myself, the more anxious I got.
My skin seemed to glow with an inner radiance I’d never noticed before. My facial features had softened somehow, losing the sharp angles I’d grown accustomed to. Even my body was different,
particularly my breasts. I lifted a hand to feel them. They were fuller, rounder, bigger.
When did all of this happen? And more importantly, how the hell did I not notice my body had changed so much?
Your last period… wasn’t it like, two months ago? Lucky asked.
Oh, no. My heart hammered in my chest. I swallowed as I realized she was right.
In the chaos of the divorce, my resignation, and Aaron’s son’s death anniversary, I’d barely paid any attention to myself. And now, everything was starting to make sense.
The dizziness in the mornings that I’d blamed on too much coffee and little sleep. The constant waves of nausea and the mood swings that had Lucky snapping at anything and everything.
It couldn’t be…

I was out of the ladies‘ room without a second thought. I burst through the revolving doors, onto the busy street, and ran toward the nearest drugstore.
Thankfully, I found one a few feet away from the office building. Without wasting another second, I located the aisle I needed, eyes scanning the cluttered rows until I found what I was looking for. The cashier, a teenager with purple hair and bored eyes, barely spared me a glance as I paid.
I found the employee bathroom next. It was cramped and didn’t smell very pleasant. But I couldn’t stand to wait; I needed to know now. My hands shook as I tore open the box. I followed the instructions, placed the edge on the sink, and set a timer for three minutes on my phone.
My reflection stared back at me from the cracked mirror.
It’s going to be okay, I told myself.
The timer buzzed.
My heart was practically in my throat as I picked up the test and looked. There were two bold, unmistakable lines.
I was pregnant.
