Chapter 100
“Maʼam, I think there’s been a serious misunderstanding about how medical diagnosis works…”
“I know it sounds crazy,” Helena rushed on, apparently oblivious to the doctor’s horror and my own fury. “But you have to understand, I only have three months to live myself. Ovarian cancer, stage four. I just want to see Xander settled and happy before I go. And Jane was so good for him. If she thought he needed her…” she trailed off, wiping a tear off her cheek.
Dr. Morrison didn’t look like he was buying it. The blank, professional expression was fast turning into one of annoyance.
“Ma’am, what you’re suggesting…tampering with medical records is not only deeply unethical, it’s illegal. I could lose my license, face criminal charges…”
“But I’m a mother. I would do absolutely anything for my son. If saving his marriage means bending a few rules, then so be it. Xander needs. Jane, and Jane needs a reason to stay.”
“Absolutely not. I will not be a party to fraud, manipulation, or any form of medical malpractice.”
“You don’t understand the situation…”

“I understand perfectly,” he cut her off, his voice rising to match hers. “And I’m asking you both to leave my office immediately before I’m forced to call security.”

Helena’s mouth opened to deliver what I was certain would be another desperate plea or threat, but I couldn’t let this spiral any further. The shame and anger I felt knowing that her behavior had reflected on me was almost unbearable. My wolf was practically clawing to get out, wanting to distance us from this toxic situation.
I shot to my feet without a second thought.
“We’re leaving. Now.” I let the Alpha tone seep into my voice. Helena seemed to recognize it.
I grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the door. She stumbled slightly, but I didn’t slow down. We needed to get out before she made this even worse.
“You’ll regret this,” Helena hissed over her shoulder at Dr. Morrison as I dragged her toward the exit. “Don’t think this is over.
The doctor’s face went from shocked to disgusted.
“Security!” he called out, reaching for his phone.
I didn’t wait another moment. I hauled Helena through the door and down the hallway. The other patients in the waiting room looked up at our hurried exit, but I paid no attention to them.
We burst through the clinic’s main doors, onto the driveway, and I immediately released her arm.
“What the actual hell were you thinking?”
Helena smoothed down her dress and adjusted her purse strap.
“I was thinking about what’s best for you.”

“You weren’t here to support me at all, were you? You were here hoping to create confusion.”
She shrugged, unbothered. “I call that dedication, Xander. You have to be realistic. You can’t always rely on rules. Sometimes you have to resort to extraordinary means. To protect the people you love.”
I was speechless.
“I know you still love Jane, that’s why I’m doing these things for
you. know my daughter. She won’t take you back, not while you’re in the offense. Maybe if you abandon your hostility, support the divorce proceedings, accept her relationship, and act mature and generous about it, maybe you can get her to warm up to you.”
You want me to help her leave me? I wanted to ask. But I didn’t want Helena to see how bad I wanted her daughter back, lest she use it against me.
“The marriage is irretrievable anyway. Jane gave up on me, there’s nothing to salvage.”
”
“Even if you can’t be a couple again, at least you could get back in touch. Re–establish some kind of connection or friendship. Wouldn’t you want that?”
My wolf rejected the notion immediately. Friends with a terrible idea if I ever heard of one.
He was right. I wanted Jane for myself and myself alone.
our mate, that’s
“I could contact Jane myself,” she continued. “We could stage a little scene. You show up while I’m talking to her, demonstrate real support, empathy, and selflessness. Show her the man she has always wanted

you to be. It would make Jane want to listen to you. You might actually have a chance if you just listen to me. Let me orchestrate this properly.”
Well, shit. Everything was muddled up in my head. I wasn’t sure whether to take Helena up on her offer or just do this all on my own.
