Chapter 6

My injuries were severe. I was laid up in the hospital for nearly two months before I fully recovered.

During those two months, Maxwell put aside his hospital duties and came to see me every day.

Every time Molly saw him, she’d mock him mercilessly.

He had always been proud and arrogant, but he tolerated it all just for a chance to see me.

However, I never once opened the door for him.

Molly knew how much I used to love him. She warned me, “If you get back together with him, I swear I’ll cut ties with you!”

I nodded. “Don’t worry. I asked for a divorce the moment I woke up.”

She frowned. “Looking at how persistent he is, it doesn’t seem like he’ll quietly agree to a divorce.”

“It’s fine. I’ll sue and go through the legal process.”

He left me to die after I was stabbed in the hospital. There were plenty of witnesses. Someone would be willing to testify for me.

On the day I was discharged, Molly had surgery and couldn’t see me off.

A nurse accompanied me instead. Just as we exited the hospital, Maxwell came rushing over.

He grabbed my hand, his eyes glowing.

“Darling, I knew you were getting discharged today. So, I prepared a surprise for you. I’ve already fired Karina and kicked her out of the hospital. Are you happy with that?”

I was unmoved. “Maxwell, I don’t care about anything between you two. The only thing that’ll make me happy now is you signing the divorce papers.”

The light in his eyes vanished. He swayed slightly, as if the words had struck him hard.

A flicker of pain crossed his gaze. “Darling, we’ve been together seven years. You can’t just walk away like it meant nothing. You can’t be this heartless.”

He was about to say more when his phone suddenly rang.

Annoyed, he tried to hang up but accidentally answered instead.

Jessie’s sobbing voice came through.

“Maxwell, ever since you fired Karina, she’s been refusing to eat. Come see her. Buy her something nice to cheer her up a little. If she ends up hurting herself, you’ll feel terrible too, won’t you?”

I sat there listening, a cold smile tugging at my lips.

Maxwell’s face darkened in embarrassment.

He shouted into the phone, “If your daughter wants to kill herself, let her. I won’t stop her!

“I now know the truth about my grandma’s death. She hated my grandma for not letting me marry her, so she pushed the wheelchair off the cliff out of spite. She even framed Natalie for it! Tell her to wait at home for the court summons!”

Jessie hung up the call without hesitation.

Maxwell turned to look at me, probably expecting praise. However, I’d already left in a cab.

In the rearview mirror, I caught a glimpse of his heartbroken face. His figure was disheveled as he ran after the car.

I closed my eyes and thought back to the year we first met.

I was a poor student sponsored by the Conner family.

By sheer coincidence, I ended up at the same university as Maxwell. He was the star of the school, yet he never looked down on me for my background.

Instead, he encouraged and admired me. I fell in love with him at first sight.

After graduation, I joined Conner Hospital. Out of gratitude, I went to visit Lydia. She took a liking to me right away, praising my

resilience and drive.

That was the first time I met Karina.

She was the daughter of the Conner family’s housekeeper. She acted sweet and well-mannered, telling me she wanted to be just like me. She wanted to become an outstanding surgeon who could one day stand by Maxwell’s side.

Later, she indeed became his junior. By then, Maxwell and I were already married.

I treated her like a younger sister. I thought Maxwell did too.

One night, he came home drunk and grabbed my hand, calling me Karina.

He said, “Karina, only when I’m with you do I feel like I’m actually in love. I regret marrying Natalie. She’s so stiff and dull, boring as hell. If it weren’t for Grandma liking her, I definitely would have married you!”
