Chapter 4

Maxwell finally came to his senses. “Mrs. Burton, I’m sorry. It’s my fault Karina was wronged.”

His voice was incredibly gentle, his face filled with guilt.

He then turned and grabbed me again.

The movement split open the stitches on my stomach. Blood started seeping out again.

I passed out from the pain. Maxwell acted as if he didn’t see it, dragging me out like a dead dog.

“Natalie, you’re never going to stop, are you? You’ve put on this whole show, but in the end, nothing actually happened to you. If you think clinging on to this act is going to get you out of what you did to Karina, you’re too naive!” Maxwell scoffed at me.

Just then, Molly rushed back after finally securing a bed in the ICU for me.

Seeing the scene before her, she looked like she wanted to kill someone.

“Maxwell! Are you trying to kill your own wife over some homewrecker? She’s bleeding again. Are you blind?”

Maxwell froze, shocked by the yelling.

He impatiently kicked me hard in the stomach.

“Molly, how long are you planning to help her with this act? I already know she’s…”

A gush of blood burst from my stomach. It splattered across the white tile floor and stained his black leather shoes.

His breath suddenly caught. But the very next second, he frowned and kicked me even harder.

“Natalie, don’t think I’ll feel sorry for you just because you’re pulling a sympathy stunt. Someone as scheming and manipulative as you could never compare to even a strand of Karina’s hair.”

Molly could no longer hold back. She rushed forward and slapped him. “Get out of my way!”

She shoved him aside. A team of doctors rushed in, tearing open my hospital gown. They were met with the gruesome sight of my wound, flesh exposed and deeply lacerated.

“What are you two doing? That wound was just stitched. How did it tear open so badly? Prepare for surgery now. She needs to be sutured again and given a transfusion immediately!”

Under the doctors’ furious questioning, Maxwell suddenly looked lost. He had also seen the bloody wound on my abdomen. ” She was clearly acting. How could it be real…”

Molly glared at him coldly.

“Maxwell, you caused her to lose her child and nearly her life. Are you happy now? Don’t forget, that was your own flesh and blood too!”

Maxwell remained stubborn.

“No, no way. She hired that attacker to stab her in the hospital! I get it now. After she hurt Karina, she was afraid I’d divorce her because of it. That’s why she staged this whole thing. You’re all just playing along with her, aren’t you?”

Molly rolled her eyes.

Jessie had been silent by the side. She saw the situation going south and immediately tried to slip away.

“Maxwell, since Ms. Shepard won’t cooperate, I’ll postpone the press conference. My poor Karina’s never been insulted like this in her life, and she’s been kind to everyone…”

Maxwell felt even more guilty.

“Mrs. Burton, please go ahead. Comfort Karina for me. Once I’m done here, I’ll make it up to her.”

Molly snorted. “What a hopeless idiot.”

She put on a mask and walked toward the sterilization room, preparing for my second round of stitching.

The second surgery took even longer than the last one.

When Molly finally came out, she was surprised to see Maxwell still waiting outside.

Seeing Molly’s calm expression, Maxwell sighed in relief. He immediately scoffed, “I knew Natalie was faking it. If she were really in trouble, you wouldn’t be so calm.”

Molly exploded. “Are you serious? I’m a doctor! If I don’t stay calm on the operating table, your wife would’ve died on that spot. You get that?

“Nat has been married to you for seven years. Has she ever had one good day? She’s been serving you like a maid! Her status is even lower than Karina, that housekeeper’s daughter!

“She’s a doctor herself and busy as hell. But when your grandma had an accident and became a vegetable, who took care of her? It was Nat. And where were you, the so-called dutiful grandson?

“You were off screwing around with Karina! I don’t get it. What the hell did Nat ever see in a cold-hearted bastard like you?”

Maxwell’s face darkened.

“She brought this on herself! If it weren’t for her, my grandma wouldn’t have died. Karina wouldn’t have been falsely accused and kicked out of the Conner family!”

Molly sneered. “Only a jerk like you would believe the crap Karina made up.”

She had her assistant bring over some documents. She raised her hand and threw them at Maxwell’s face.

“Mrs. Conner Senior’s death was suspicious. Natalie’s been secretly investigating it for years. Take a good look. See for yourself who the real murderer is.”
