Chapter 9 A Ride
Lamar had always been calm no matter what happened to me,
never losing his cold.
Yet, he immediately called me after bombarding me with texts.
I believed it was his pride. He thought I cheated on him with
Terrell and wouldn’t rest until he had an explanation.
Since he wouldn’t be my husband soon, I didn’t see the need to
explain to him.
My gaze turned cold and I said indifferently, “In the hospital. I’m
tired and want to rest. Bye.”
I hung up and muted Lamar on WhatsApp.
Before I ended the call, I heard Matilda’s voice. She was calling Lamar’s name sweetly.
Lamar surely was busy. He had to make time to ask about me
while fooling around with another woman.
I wondered what a ruckus Matilda would make after the call.
Because I didn’t get a loan, I had to contact the expert to delay

the surgery.
Over the phone, the expert said seriously, “One week. No more.
unless you want to die.“,
My eyelashes fluttered. A thousand thoughts ran in my head.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t afraid of dying. I wanted to live. And
I wanted to live happily in the future. My life was too hard
before.
At university, I buried myself in my study and didn’t make
friends. When I asked all the people I could think of for money, I
had only 5,000 dollars.
It wasn’t nearly enough.
I sighed and got out of bed. I wanted to work.
If Terrell hadn’t demanded to send me to this special ward, I’d
return to the ER for my shift.
Working overtime would give me money while lying on the bed would cost me my salary.
At that moment, every penny counted. I couldn’t just lie in bed
and do nothing.
ER was always shorthanded. Although I’d only been gone for

half a day, they almost got overwhelmed.
I didn’t take a break until midnight.
The next few days‘ weather was rainy and cloudy. I decided to
return to Moonstone Heights to pack some clothes as there was
one set in my dorm.
I’d be working for days and wouldn’t have time to go back
anyway.
At midnight, Benevolence Hospital’s hallway was quiet and spooky despite the bright lights.
I looked down to call for an Uber but couldn’t find a suitable
one, my eyebrows knitting.
As I strolled through it, a man spoke up. He sounded upset.
Frowning, Terrell asked, “Isn’t your shift ended long ago?”
He glanced at his watch. It was 2 am.
I chuckled bitterly, “Employees can’t get off work that easily. However, you’re the director. Why are you working overtime too?”
Terrell didn’t answer my question and glanced at my phone.

“To Moonstone Heights? I can give you a ride. It’s on my way!”
Liar.
I lowered my eyes, remembering Terrell’s car left in the opposite
direction of Moonstone Heights yesterday.
He was taking a detour to give me a ride?
Terrell and I were classmates. He suddenly returned to my life
and cared about me too much. It was hard not to assume he
liked me.
However, I knew it was impossible.
Therefore, I turned down his offer.
“Don’t bother.” I waved my phone and smiled, “An Uber is
faster.””
Terrell arched a brow and stood in the hallway with me.
“In this case, you can give me a ride. I’m too tired to drive
anyway!”
was speechless and wondered if he really had a house in
Moonstone Heights too.
I still couldn’t get an Uber after 20 minutes.

Terrell dangled his car key and looked at me with a smirk.
“Forget it. Let me drive you.”
I tsked in embarrassment and yawned involuntarily.
I was exhausted and only wanted to go home and rest sooner.
So, I could come to work earlier tomorrow.
I stopped struggling and said yes softly before following Terrell
out.
